Mathematics is soothing it never changes overnight. Why not derive the least squares method of linear regression? or just the quadratic formula from completing the square? Pick something old and hazy but well worn.
Math therapy works.

Someone said “good morning” to me at the bus stop and before thinking about it I said “no it’s not. It is objectively *not* a good morning.”
I regretted this instantly all the bus stop regulars already think I’m a strange little nerd. Now they will think (know?) I’m a weirdly politically obsessed strange little nerd.
But instead of the look 👀 of disapproval, hilariously everyone agreed.
“Bad morning!”
“BAD morning!”
I need your help and creativity.
You know how scratch off lottery tickets work? Did you know you can buy stickers that can turn anything into a “scratch off”? Well ever since I’ve discovered these stickers I’ve been desperate to find a way to use them in teaching grade school level CS. The idea of hidden keys, broken seals— I know there’s an angle here.
Am I just attracted to stickers? Yes. I have a few ideas but they aren’t good enough. I turn to the fedi to enable this sticker stuff.
nothing worse than coming home to cranky ants!
When you’re nervous it’s easy to forget basic things like having a coffee or your medicine. Then a day you expected to be bad goes bad for real. Hydrate and feed your ants!
It’s funny how everyone keeps looking more closely at the button I wear *every* day today because they think it might be political. (well it is political just not in the way one expects) this button is from the awesome poster art from the ant movie: Phase IV
Geologist explains a canyon wall and how it tells the story of "snowball earth"
It's hard to overstate the impact and importance of "The Wiz"-- this musical and movie brought together a never seen before star studded cast, and touched millions of young people with a wholesome and celebratory version of Black Vaudeville: a tradition that goes back to the 1890s.
It didn't make a lot of sense to white audiences, but it wasn't really for them. You have to understand that as a little girl seeing a black woman as the main character in a movie for kids was ... well this was it.
I met Quincy Jones when I was about 8 years old. Remarkable man. Huge creative talent, and personally I think this is his most important work.
And maybe someday it will get the remake it deserves.
RIP to a giant. #QuincyJones
Can you imagine the sheer nerve and chutzpah it takes to be a JUDGE for a cat fancy contest?? Not just judging one cat but dozens... as they all look at you, judging you back.
"My understanding is humans are supposed to have more hair than you do on top of your head."
"Your body lines are not very elegant."
"Skin lacks a healthy luster, arm and leg lengths are not what we expect for a top grade human."
"even for a human, this one makes a lot of pointless noise."
-the cats probably
Every cat is perfect in every way. But, Pica is the most perfect in the most ways of them all.
She's all cat. The Most Cat Cat.
And that is the sum total of my "judgements."
I love how on the fediverse #onHere the number of "likes" a post has have little impact on the reach of the post AND the number is literally subjective.
Your local server can only count the likes it knows about. If you aren't federated with someone who likes a post you see that like isn't included in the total. So, the numbers depend on who is viewing the post.
That said, I am curious about absolute numbers, a stats server could spider out, federate with everything and post most liked posts.
Thank you everyone for a lovely #monsterdon the giant ants have soothed my soul.
Really this is exactly what was needed at this moment IMO
Children of parents with more economic power are more obedient in such circumstances because power structures serve them well so trusting they will work as advertised is smart.
Children of parents with less power have already started to discover that they may be treated unfairly and it's best to get their payment upfront. Also smart.
What's not so smart is that such a divide exists.
When the economy crashes it's great if you are rich. You can buy companies and stock. You don't have to pay as much for labor because workers are desperate.
Granted this is a very short term thing. In the long run, it is perhaps not so good that the pie is no longer growing in size... even if you happen to get to eat more of it. (Or not eat, no one can eat *that* much. No one can wisely spend that much money.)
Climate change has some similar features.
It's naive to think that wealthy people are better at the marshmallow test than the rest of us. The inaction of climate change and their glee at inflicting economic harm for short term gain proves otherwise.
Marshmallow Test:
Child who can't wait and eats both: poor impulse control
Child who waits: Better impulse control
Child who finds the whole bag under the table and stuffs them in their mouth, gets sick: future billionaire
Friendly reminder that "The Marshmallow Test" may be a better test of how much a child trusts the adult who is running the test than anything else. (And children can have good reasons for not trusting random people "in charge")
Many of the correlations with "success" might just be measuring class divides.
I will keep doing this! no one can stop me! The puns will only get worse, more meandering and tortured and there is nothing anyone can do about it!!!
IDK
Fruit preserves are very sticky and adding a lot of air to them? It's going to make bubbles, you'll get gooey fruit all over the kitchen cabinets.
Perhaps it's not such a good idea to ... pump up the jam.
I just texted a friend who I think of as someone who I don't need to tell to vote. But, they said "thank god, I don't know what to do about the ballot measures, I know you care about that stuff can you explain it?"
Another similar friend CLEARLY had forgotten.
Text 'em all "did you vote yet or are you going on election day?"
Your text is more cool and fun than the texts from the campaigns.
