Kristi Noem cancelled book tour appearances this week due to "severe weather" in South Dakota. I wanted to let everyone know that, despite this awful, awful weather, we are keeping safe and will somehow survive.
Granted, I live a three hour drive from Kristi, so I included a screen shot of the weather app showing how things are in Pierre today.
I’m glad Kristi Noem is getting hate for killing a dog, as she should be, and I want to make sure folks know she’s terrible for lots of other reasons too
-Cutting lunch programs for low income kids -Making SD hostile to trans people -Banning abortion -Racism
As I've gotten more public-facing in my career I've had to set up boundaries around people contacting me. There are a lot of demands on my time and energy, and for my own mental health I've created clear parameters about what kinds of contacts I will respond to. People want to have discussions, pick my brain, etc, and I only have so much bandwidth.
I've been asked, "What if I want to contact you, but my request is outside those boundaries?" I have a simple answer that I hope is very clear:
If you're a psychologist and you work for insurance companies reviewing claims for "medical necessity," I'm going to ask you for two favors:
1. Re-think your life choices. 2. Make sure you're actually qualified to speak to the population you're assessing. If you deny autism testing as unnecessary, I'm going to google you, and if you have no training in autistic adults I am going to tell my client how they can contact your licensing board and report you for practicing outside your scope.
A company I do education for asked me to prepare a talk and asked what my rate would be. I told them, and they replied that they had budgeted $100 more than I asked for so they'd be paying me over my rate. This is the way, not asking people to work for free.
Continuing Education Course: Neurodiversity-Affirming Psychological Evaluations: ADHD and Autism
It is well past time that providers and evaluators took a neurodiversity-affirming approach with our clients. Unfortunately, many clients have experienced harm as a result of non-affirming practices and approaches to care. This course is essential for those who have a basic understanding of neurodiversity-affirming mental health care and who conduct evaluations with ADHD…
@freemo No idea if there were conditions but she could have been being petty 🤷♀️ I feel like even if there was good reason to turn down the federal funds, we should have found a way to make feeding kids a priority
@freemo Actually Kristi Noem (governor) turned down federal funding for school lunches, then state legislature voted down expanding the lunch program due to lack of money
@freemo 100%! I’m just yelling about kids specifically today because of my awful state government. NO ONE should go hungry. EVERYONE should have enough to eat, clean water, a safe place to live, etc
South Dakota’s government just voted down a bill to feed children because we “can’t afford it” but we can afford to send troops to Texas to harm children at the border. Recently our government turned down federal money to feed children in poverty. Because we are a pro-life state. 🤬
Psychologist, writer, author, speaker. I’m licensed in a few states and living in South Dakota. Or 12 pigeons in a trench coat. I hope you like memes and cat pictures. #ActuallyAutistic, #ActuallyADHD. She/her:rickroll:Please no DMs unless we're mutuals or if I specifically say it's ok.
