@jeffcliff I super don’t agree that the FSF has any right to say anything about ethics generally, and I also specifically disagree that the Four Freedoms have any relevancy here whatsoever

“Bluesky is bad because people make jokes and have fun” really isn’t the diss you think it is

I was reminded today of an oldie but a goodie: the “3-2-1 rule” for data backups. For any critical data you should have:

- 3 copies
- on 2 different forms of media
- with at least 1 copy being off-site

Not a hard and fast rule (this rule dates back to when “two forms of media” implied “disks and tapes”), but a really good starting point still.

There’s a certain kind of person who excels at staying just on this side of any bright lines in a community code of conduct, but nevertheless manages to be so unpleasant as to drive other people away. I don’t have any good ideas about how to deal with those people, especially if they get into a position of power.

I think the bloom is off the rose for me about Mastodon. Between the utterly crap experience whenever a toot goes mildly viral, and the obnoxious HOA-ish attitudes about what "should" be “allowed" on Mastodon, this is feeling less and less like a place I wanna super invest in. Bummer.

@b0rk precisely: I don't want to have to be so careful about what I say, the value in formats like this for me is in being off-the-cuff. I edit myself pretty carefully on my blog, don't wanna do it here.

Like, if I say something offensive the fact that a bunch of people will call me out on it is a feature, not a bug. But realizing that I can't use the words "open source" without inviting folks to relitigate the “open source" vs "free software" debate in my mentions is a huge bummer.

With my busted knee I can’t run, but I still managed to keep my Christmas tradition of going up Black Mountain. Quite a climb, I think I prefer getting there on foot. The descent down the old Alpine Road was pretty amazing though.
