I was just reading that Moderna just presented a paper at an Intl Soc. for Vaccines conference on a new mRNA vaccine that is in phase 2 trials which has broad effectiveness against orthopoxviruses - those are the causative agents of smallpox, cowpox, mpox, and a bunch of other viruses. This is HUGE.

What in the world did Trump mean by resuming nuclear testing? We already do operational testing of strategic delivery systems (e.g., Minuteman III "Glory Trips" launched over the Pacific to the Kwajalein Atoll testing area). If he meant blowing up warheads when other countries do, well no other countries are doing that currently. It might be that he was confused about a Russian test of a nuclear *powered* missile. Scientists used AI to write coherent viral genomes, using them to synthesize bacteriophages capable of killing resistant strains of bacteria.

"The researchers synthesized DNA from the AI-designed genomes and inserted them into host bacteria to grow phages. These phages were then experimentally tested to see whether they could infect and kill E.coli.

Some 16 of the 302 AI-designed bacteriophage showed host specificity for E. coli and could infect the bacteria. The researchers found that combinations of AI-designed phages could infect and kill three different E. coli strains, which the wild-type ΦX174 was unable to do."

Finished reading On The Beach by Nevil Shute. A dismal 1957 account of the end of all human life after a nuclear war. The radioactive fallout is slowly spreading over the Earth apparently from the North to the South, ultimately to reach Antarctica last. A group of people in the Melbourne area of Australia are both indulging their delusions of a future and coming to grips with being among the last people on Earth and living out their final days as the radiation rapidly closes on them. Spoiler: they all die in the end.

Very little is said about nuclear war itself, other than a brief conversation between a naval officer and his wife about how perhaps people could have been better "educated" if the newspapers hadn't focused on meaningless, attention-grabbing content rather than more serious topics. Other than that, the results speak for themselves. Not a great book. An ok book. ⭐ ⭐ #bookstodon

I saw an article headlined "We can again be the country we were after 9/11: We flew the flag, helped our neighbors, opened our hearts, and supported our government."

Are you kidding? We had a government that immediately took away rights and turned the Eye of Sauron inward. It came up with the ominous word "homeland" and stood up a disastrous Department of Homeland Security which is today stomping people on the head, kidnapping people by the thousands, trying to secretly deport planeloads of children in the night, renditioning people to foreign prisons and war zones. I don't want to be that fucking country. I want to be the country we were BEFORE 9-11, before a reactionary extremist trend took hold among conservatives and turned them all into engines of hate and fear. Before the Federalist Society successfully took over the SCOTUS, which was the cornerstone of literally all the massive corruption and criminality happening in government today. Good grief. Some people really remember the post 9-11 history differently.
