“do you work here” when I’m wearing headphones, not a uniform, have a mask on, and i’m carrying all kinds of things. it will never stop.

on friday i was wearing big noise canceling headphones and had a carry on bag and was trying to pay for a water bottle in one of those self-service kiosks at the airport, when a european man made me take off my headphones to ask “do you work here”? come on man I know I’m the right skin color but maybe some observation?!

I know this sounds terrible and I'm always ashamed to admit it, but I wish I had a system to help me maintain relationships with other people. A way to remind me to text them, their birthdays, the names of their loved ones, their postal addresses. my shame comes from people telling me "if you cared you would do this spontaneously" but that is simply not true. not how my brain works.
