We ought to teach our children to build. Here's a solid log playhouse built by four very young brothers in 1890. Pine, riven pine board roof, smoke opening for the fieldstone hearth inside. You can't tell from the photos but it is tiny. Currently in a Stockholm open air museum. -

It would be nice if we got another Mozart or Michelangelo. But it isn't going to happen. We don't have the heart for it anymore. The soil isn't there anymore. It takes generations of people fiddling away at home with their neighbors on dark winter nights to raise a decent composer. It takes generations of writers constantly reading, testing, living the canon to raise a Milton or Shakespeare. Now people want instant success or nothing.
We need, as a culture, to stop consuming and start creating. There should be a metal band in every garage. A string quartet in every little publishers office. A choir in every police station.
And they need to have pride in their roots they need a terroire (to borrow a concept from wine), they need a Sibelius who will compose their music because he is so damned proud of being a Finn. They need a center.
In the centrifugal force of modernism every bond of affection or force is obliterated. We are all atomized. You can't expect to reap anything good when the soil is dead and all is air.
But we can change this. And it will be the most important thing we ever do. Teach all our children music, let a billion souls sing. Leave no child ignorant in the basic arts of drawing, sculpture, dance.
What else are we here for? A planet teeming with billions in unprecedented wealth and we can't compose a single Opera that will rouse men to stand up and shout themselves hoarse to save our lives, single movie that will inspire a million young couples to start the greatest adventure in the history of mankind: the family.
In the words of the old poet: "Turn of the damned radio and take the fiddle down from the wall."

There are currently 17.3 million high school students in the U.S. It takes on average 4 years to gain a bachelor's degree in engineering. If Elon wanted to get the top talent he could simply set up the most demanding, elite engineering college in the U.S., handpicking the top 800 talented kids of those 17.3 million. An aptitude test and a promise of employment upon graduation and he'd be good to go for generations. If Elon can't plan a measly 4 years into the future I quite seriously doubt his plans to colonize Mars. -

The Segovia Aqueduct in Spain, built by Romans in early 2nd century A.D., famously using no mortar or cement (maybe due to a lack of local sources of suitable lime stone), which made it flexible when hit by minor quakes. Still in use. -

Wool insulation for homes is one of the best. Most people prefer the washed wool impregnated with borax but I know at least three people in Europe (France, UK, Ireland) who used unwashed untreated wool for their homes without any problems. Why not try it on a chicken coop for ex?

Still thinking of that 1986 experiment by a professor at Shizuoka U who tried breeding mice in cages of wood, concrete, and iron. The mice in the concrete cages just wouldn't breed well, most of the litter died soon after birth, but in the metal cages it was even worse. -

Possibly the largest 19th century xylothek (wood library) in the world is held in Alnarp, Sweden.
