Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Saturday, 10-Jun-2023 00:58:04 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @tezrak I think for better or worse Fate has become kind of the background radiation of narrative gaming. Nobody talks about it much because it's persistently there.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Friday, 26-May-2023 01:00:16 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @silverwizard We migrated from on-prem to AWS into the LA local zone because it was discovered our app was very sensitive to database latency (previously everything was in Irvine). And because of available EBS volume types in LA, had to go with striping multiple volumes to get the IOPS the clusters needed. The hope was that LA would get volume types available in OR. Now we kind of want to migrate to OR for cost-reduction/simplicity. Striped volumes are a PITA to expand.

Maybe look into Netreo? I have no experience with it but an old friend is one of the founders.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Apr-2023 03:30:14 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @silverwizard We were just talking about how useless Datadog is. We don't use it, but we are starting to have a need for monitoring that can handle more than one or two platforms rather than adding a new product to the mix. Right now we have New Relic, Sentry One, plus the monitoring for Azure, AWS, MongoDB...logging in Splunk, CloudTrail...so many places for stuff. Datadog was dismissed out of hand from previous experience.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Monday, 27-Feb-2023 12:50:54 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) Today's #TTRPG hot take (I haven't had one in a while): I don't care if you are the most charismatic, smoothest talker, best public speaker, whatever. If your character does not have the same qualities backing up whatever roll they're making, your performance doesn't mean shit. Even if they do, your performance won't decide the outcome. That's what the dice are for.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Monday, 27-Feb-2023 12:50:48 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @Steve98052 So should a player that gives a terrible speech but their character is a great orator be penalized if they roll great?

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Feb-2023 07:28:04 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @silverwizard TDP magic is flashy. There's somatic and verbal components, so that would be the potential downside. And if it's dark magic there's a whole other level of downside.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Feb-2023 07:17:58 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @silverwizard So I'll expand on the wizard example a bit. In Tales of Xadia, for example, you don't roll to "cast" spells. Spells are a part of what you are trying to do. Mages have a small selection of "named" spells that they can add to their dice pool, but even without adding one the player can add their mage distinction die to their pool and describe how they're using magic to help get the door open. They just won't have the additional die from one of their "named" spells.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Feb-2023 07:02:57 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @silverwizard I do it natively in every game I run. Fiction first is the way to go for me.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Feb-2023 06:53:55 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @silverwizard Yup. And that affects the outcome. Sometimes if you want the door to be*intact* after opening it you include your d6 Rogue and d8 Lockpicks instead of your d12 Warrior and d10 Battleaxe in your pool.

Rivetgeek (He/Him) (rivetgeek@dice.camp)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Feb-2023 06:43:51 JST Rivetgeek (He/Him) @silverwizard In Cortex Prime (and by extension Leverage I believe), Roles are like general skill packages. It's pretty trivial to do the extra stuff in Cortex as-is.
