It's been a day. I discovered the people on a new team I have to work with think LA is burning because of satanists and that my family and friends who live there (and I guess aren't satanists) shouldn't worry because god will take care of everything. I need some wine.

I really hate Meta. I just created a new Pixelfed account.

Meta is deleting links to Pixelfed, a decentralized Instagram competitor. On Facebook, the company is labeling links to Pixelfed.social as “spam” and deleting them immediately. Pixelfed is an open-source, community funded and decentralized image sharing platform that runs on Activity Pub, which is the same technology that supports Mastodon and other federated services. Pixelfed.social is the largest Pixelfed server, which was launched in 2018 but has gained renewed attention over the last week.

@mekkaokereke @Makyris I'm wondering if the DNC is going to recalibrate to appeal to its previous base. I'm guessing the answer is no. The party pretty much abandoned my state after 2010 at both the state and federal level.

@mekkaokereke I live on the TN/Al border. A few years ago I went to to Equal Justice Initiative museum in Montgomery and the museum has a whole section about the shift from slavery to mass incarceration. I didn't know anything about that until I visited and it was illuminating and horrifying. I highly recommend everyone visit that museum, especially white people. Our prison system really is modern day slavery and democrats have done a really bad job helping to create a truly equitable society. Alabama used a chunk of its covid relief money to build more prisons and the Biden administration didn't try to stop them.

@miniosiris @dansup @pixelfed excited about the new app! I'm having the same problem logging in on my Android Pixel phone. DuckDuckGo is my default browser and I get the following error trying to use the app, the above error window opens in DDG. I can log in to pixelfed.social on Chrome. I don't want to change my default browser, any ideas?

This has probably been around for a while, but I just saw it at Publix today and got some, Bob's Red Mill egg replacer that cost $4.60 and is the equivalent of 34 eggs. It's made from potato starch, tapioca flour, baking soda, and psyllium husks. This is for baking and I'm going to try it soon. Way cheaper than eggs! #Eggs #EggReplacer

@skinnylatte that's interesting, a majority of my friends in their 20s and 30s are really into craft beer and mixed drinks here in the southeast. I like a glass of wine with dinner at home but don't like drinking when I go out, mostly because I'm cheap 😂 (I'm GenX).

@avlcharlie @dalias the high deductible plans are probably affordable for people in their 20s. I'm in my 50s so even though I'm healthy the prices are jacked up. I also live in a rural county and the prices here are a lot higher than the neighboring county with a large city. The county line is two miles from my house.

@dalias the monthly cost of the premium, and because it wouldn't pay for anything up to $9200, is waaaaay more than my mortgage payment. I'd have to pay $17,000 a year before insurance paid for anything. And plans with more reasonable deductibles are well over $1100 a month. And there's no guarantee if something really bad happened that the insurance would actually pay out and not leave me with a huge bill. My state has a farm bureau health insurance plan that's affordable, around $300/month, and grandfathered in that can still deny plans to people with preexisting conditions, but it's managed by... United Healthcare.

@dalias also bet you the new administration won't get rid of the ACA, but they'll just axe all subsidies and make everyone pay the full price.

@dalias @avlcharlie the ACA destroyed my career. What I meant was for most people like me it's pointless to try to find an affordable plan and we should just get a job that provides affordable insurance. I had to close my small biz and return to the corporate world solely for affordable insurance. Yes the cheapest (but still expensive) and shittiest option that cover nothing until you hit a $9000 deductible is only a set percentage of your income, but to get a plan that actually pays for anything is wildly unaffordable and the prices just get worse the older you are. And the new administration will probably get rid of subsidies so nobody will be able to afford it.

I decided to see what ACA plans cost next year, this is the cheapest one. So once again I can't afford to restart my consulting business. My annual reminder of why I hate the ACA. American health insurance is a legal mafia. #HealthInsurance #ACA

@avlcharlie it's totally pointless to even have it if they don't pay anything until you hit $9000. That to me is just a catastrophic plan and should only cost $100/month because you will never use it unless something really bad happens. The older you get the more expensive it gets. So people my age and older get super screwed.
