Albacore Park (albacorepark@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 13-Oct-2024 01:38:23 JST Albacore Park Pooli was born in the Navy yard at Pearl Harbor. She was then taken aboard the USS Fremont where she saw action at the Marianas, the Palau group, the Philippines and Iwo Jima. When battle stations rang, Pooli would head for the mail room and curl up in a mail sack.
This photo was taken in 1959 on Pooli's 15th birthday. By now a WWII veteran, her uniform is adorned with three service ribbons and four battle stars.

Albacore Park (albacorepark@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 21-Sep-2024 17:36:18 JST Albacore Park The forward escape trunk served as the main entry point into the submarine and also as an emergency escape route if the submarine was incapacitated or unable to surface. Above the hatch, a submarine rescue chamber or mini-sub would be positioned, enabling crew members to climb up into it. In the absence of a rescue vessel, the crew could escape into the water and use inflatable life vests to reach the surface.
