The forward escape trunk served as the main entry point into the submarine and also as an emergency escape route if the submarine was incapacitated or unable to surface. Above the hatch, a submarine rescue chamber or mini-sub would be positioned, enabling crew members to climb up into it. In the absence of a rescue vessel, the crew could escape into the water and use inflatable life vests to reach the surface.
