@admin I am surprised by Twitter's resilience despite Musk's repeated attempts to destroy it. I'm still there because I need to be. My hierarchy is Mastodon first, then Twitter. Bluesky and Threads come in after that.
My best-case scenario is that Threads, once it’s actually good to go, becomes the sort of mass platform that Twitter used to be, and that I'll be able to follow people there from Mastodon. But that may be asking too much.
@admin None of this is worth paying much attention to until Threads has desktop access and lists.
@jeff @BostonAbrams @melaniesill This is not correct. https://dankennedy.net/2022/12/23/a-long-island-weekly-had-the-goods-on-santos-several-weeks-before-election-day/
@jeff @BostonAbrams @melaniesill If the point is that local news is dying, then the local weekly’s article contradicts it rather than reinforces it. Did you know, for instance, that there was good local coverage of the Flint water crisis? But no one paid attention until the national media swooped in. https://grist.org/article/the-goldman-prize-missed-the-black-heroes-of-flint-just-like-the-media-did/
@jeff @melaniesill @EdSanders @BostonAbrams I’ve spent most of my academic career reporting on and writing about the local news crisis. I just don’t think this is a good example.
Not what I’d have expected from NPR, but it’s 100% true. Good for them.
I'm a journalist and academic specializing in the future of local news. My next book, co-authored with Ellen Clegg, will be called "What Works in Community News: Media Startups, News Deserts, and the Future of the Fourth Estate." It will be published by Beacon Press in early 2024. Follow our updates at our website and podcast as well as my blog, Media Nation, both in the links below.
