ough sharkey backend seems to not be working 100% for whatever reason. actions in the frontend don't produce any sort of frontend feedback

it is packed like this because of the extensive history of unreliable file transfers, yes. however, parchive is different from a chunked rar archive.

parchive is something rarely seen outside of usenet in this one's experience, the scene solves this a little differently

in the packaging sections of scene rules of certain release types it is actually specified that "Releases must be packed with RAR files and broken into a maximum of 101 volumes."

and to further the point "Custom RAR tools can be used. Files produced from custom tools must adhere to the RAR3/v2.0 or RAR4/v2.9 archive specification and retain identical compatibility with extractors and demuxers as file created with WinRAR/rar". afaik WinRAR doesn't implement any of the parchive specification versions.

instead of data parity built into the archive, scene groups use archive chunks and an SFV file containing a list of the CRC32 checksums for each archive piece to allow users to check for corrupted archives and re-fetch the part(s) of the archive that may have been corrupted in transit

the specific instance that prompted thermia to make the post was a scene release following the rules for x264-HD releases

either way, to be clear, the post above is a modified copypasta, thermia doesn't have anything against multi part rars as a concept, thermia understands that it has served a purpose historically, however it does sigh a little bit every time it has to fetch a large multipart archive of any type through a web browser for example. they can get pretty unwieldy ^^
