The thing I loved about birdsite was the random sharing of ideas. I don’t feel like I have the same ambient awareness about folks here.
So: What’s the first song that changed your life, and why?
Mine’s UF Orb’s Towers of Dub, which I held on the New Music Foundation, a Monday night FM radio program that was one of the few places Montrealers could hear this new thing called electronica. Sent me down a rabbithole of Underworld, Future Sound of London, Orbital, and Chemical Brothers.
Once, a journalist monetized (got a job) and then reported. Now, they start reporting, and then monetize (with a following, which turns into money when they watch ads, or donate, or buy your book.)
The startup costs have gone to zero (well, a phone.) The monthly costs, too (well, a data plan.) And the printing costs are actually zero.
It’s one of the Internet’s two-edged swords: Worthy stories get covered; nonsense is peddled as fact.
(I hate seeing myself on screen, and despise self-adulation; but I’ll make an exception here because there were so many amazing people in those three days the video makes me ridiculously happy for what government can be.)
