There’s a lot here I think is fine but there’s zero pushback or even acknowledgement Murphy was central to pushing Dems hard right turn on “border security” except for one vaguely creepy reference to “our borders started to get erased”. Would love someone to push him on this
The myth that neoliberalism opened borders is the exact opposite of what happened. NAFTA, WTO, and Operation Gatekeeper (Clinton’s militarization of the border and change in US policy that explicitly used thirst/violence as a deterrent) all began within in the same 365 day period
note 1) Israel can keep bombing all it wants 2) Criteria for “improve” is vague and like “invasion of Rafah” they’ll just post facto change the definition
BUT what’s noteworthy is the tacit admission the US can condition military aid something I was told was pointless 5 mins ago
The WH/Harris campaign have approached genocide in Gaza entirely in terms of PR. They feel they can continue arming the horrors at minimal electoral costs if they avoid hard questions that poke holes in the “ceasefire talks”/Biden Powerless/Biden Secretly Fuming polite DC fiction
Sorry to be Jaded Savvy Pundit but it makes perfect sense because Harris assumes (correctly) Palestinian voters would ask her to defend her (and Biden’s) Gaza policy and she won’t be able to gloss over it with “pushing for a ceasefire” pablum like she does with dopey liberals
Palestinian voters would point out the 900000000 pound elephant in the room which is the “ceasefire talks” are a fake PR delay tactic and they will point out that Biden can impose a ceasefire at will. It would thus wreck the “tirelessly pushing for a ceasefire” illusion
yes most Americans are indifferent to the global south—namely people at the southern border and Gaza, a great deal of the US population is heavily propagandized, chauvinist and glib. And I think electeds should not pander to this but instead push for a more moral world, correct.
Plenty of popular left policy is ignored all the time. Some rw/center policy is indeed popular but the point is it’s only corporate/imperial/nativist popular policy that suddenly becomes urgently prioritized. i wrote about this selective popularism in June https://inthesetimes.com/article/biden-popularism-democrats-immigration-2024
The popular myth that democrats only promote conservative policies because they are Forced By The Public ignores that this almost always goes in only one direction. Mysteriously they are rarely forced to support popular leftwing policies, only Rightwing ones,
