cp -r dirname ~/someplaceelse will copy dirname into the directory someplaceelse.

cp -r dirname/ ~/someplaceelse will copy the CONTENTS of dirname into the directory someplaceelse, mixing the two folders all together.

Or is it the other way around?

In Linux they are the same.

I copy my files
Mac scatters them to the winds
Never recovered.
