The video I'm putting out tomorrow had a whole thing about Internet Archive that I removed.

The reason why is that I can't figure out if the "forgotten software" I found is fully archived right now. So talking about it could be confusing to viewers later on.

IA helps so many of us spread a bit of joy in our lives, and I hope they are able to weather all of this.

"Why would you use original hardware, emulation exists" sounds as absurd to me as "why would you play a guitar when Spotify is an option".

Obviously emulation is fine.

Yes, I've blocked these assholes. Yes, I've muted these words. Yes, I've defederated from these instances.

But, people keep bringing them into my mentions. They email screenshots like this to me. They keep telling me I have to see it. New assholes show up each day and I have to do it all again.

This is what we mean when we say that the fediverse might not be good for our mental health.

Bring back PC buzzers/speakers. I want to hear loud beeps on POST.

Since a few of you have asked, I'll just explain what happened this time.

I posted an affirming message like I do every Friday, with a message like "call someone you miss".

Folks in the comments started sexually harassing me, and when someone pushed back, the harassers said that they have fun harassing me.

My favorite* part of this is that because I'd blocked them, they could carry on talking about how fun it is to harass me and I couldn't see it.

With notoriety comes attacks, I guess. I was hoping the fediverse would feel different, but it's just not.

I know. That's why I'm saying maybe this place isn't fun for a woman with a following.

I just realized what I hate about modern chat: it's not a small window on the screen anymore, it's *the whole screen*.

Discord (et al) is barely usable in a small window, whereas AOL Instant Messenger was *very* usable in a small window as you went about your browsing.

For me, smaller window = fewer distractions.

I've had a few folks ask me how I make https://www.thestopbits.net load so quickly.

It's a boring answer: it's tiny.

There's almost nothing you download when you visit. There's no JavaScript and we use whatever font you have as the default.

It's not a trick, it's just how things used to be. It has to load on a 28.8 modem, so on your modern machine it's going to feel zippy.

Modern websites can feel zippy too.

I'm far from a web design expert, but I've made a point to try and leave as small of a footprint on my websites as is practical.

It's better for me, as I don't have to monitor as much junk. Don't have to worry about hitting all the right analytics.

It's better for visitors, as you all get faster page loads with fewer hassles.

It's better for the planet as I can do a lot more with fewer resources.

Please don't write "fan fiction" about me. It creeps me out when it's shared with me.
