I am reminded of the saying that you need to learn the rules to be able to break them. In other words, you can only become interested meaningfully in how things break once you have some understanding of how they work.

As you point out it can be difficult on administrative grounds for organizations or businesses to make a donation outright. One approach that worked for me as a (now retired) manager, and I mention it for readers who may be in a position to act, is to identify needed features or fixes that are relevant for your organization and finance that work. Then you have a business case and measurable deliverables for the bean counters.

This speaks to me as someone who once worked in weather modelling. Garbage in, garbage out is one thing. But what if your model itself is garbage? With all due respect to economic modellers. I know this ain't a walk in the park.
