so you're saying if we travel back in time, any time, we better max out our metalworking skilltree? -

cell classic (cell@shitposter.world)'s status on Thursday, 11-Apr-2024 20:03:22 JST cell classic @hj you try to show modern jet engine design to wwii powers and it won't be that helpful because the prerequisites (advanced metallurgy) didn't exist back then
but show them composite armor concept and suddenly you would have changed the course of history -

composite armor technology that was completely alien to WWII industrial giants applied in such a way DIY effectively stopping all police small arms, it’s so elegant -

cell classic (cell@shitposter.world)'s status on Monday, 08-Apr-2024 17:58:15 JST cell classic @Zergling_man Kiev/Kyiv is an interesting case though because we do have a food item named after it: Chicken Kiev
Back in the 70s/80s, when Mainland China became relevant and displaced Taiwan on the global stage, media and governments switched from using Peking to Beijing, and now everyone calls it Beijing. but if you order roasted duck with condiments, restaurants will still call it Peking Duck to this day
it'll be interesting to see decades from now tbh if i order rolled chicken cutlet with herbed butter whether it'll be Chicken Kiev or Chicken Kyiv tbh -

cell classic (cell@shitposter.world)'s status on Monday, 08-Apr-2024 17:58:15 JST cell classic @Zergling_man sorry, retyping the reply because i'm quite eepy
eh i find that exonyms and endonyms are the purview of governments and media institutions; related somewhat to their efforts to control/standardize language, not really of much interest to me, as long as someone can understand what you mean then that's alright
for example one day Germany in a justified anti-French crusade decides to mandate everyone call Cologne "Köln". everyone will still recognize it if you use Cologne but then there might be connotations of Germophobia or even worse, you will be recognized as a Francophile! but depending on the pervading sentiment and time eventually either things will stick or they won't, that's how language over time develops after all -
