    If you are a parent of a nursery or school-age child, does your nursery/ school have an explicit policy on taking photos of children while on the premises? If so, does it include a clause on connected glasses?
    I am parent representative for my child's nursery, and I wonder if connected glasses are worth discussing explicitly, or if they fall under the general "don't photograph other people's children" rule.

    A great tragedy in my life is that I like wearing long dresses and flowy trousers, but I also enjoy ride a bike that has no guard around the chain. This is especially an issue when I’m cycling to work as I do need to look presentable there and cycling gear is… not that.
    How do fellow #biketooter solve this problem?
    Ankle straps? Tying up dresses? Changing rooms?

    @cazabon I hate those. Instant block every time. If you want to follow a hashtag, just… follow the hashtag?
    They are pointless and bring nothing to the table.

    One of the best things on the Internet is NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day. Running every day since 1995. No bells, no whistles, just a one stunning and/or interesting picture every day with a caption. Nothing ever breaks, the code is feather-weight light.
    It just works.

    It’s a travesty that 5 years after the event, we still don’t have a movie or a mini-series about the Evergiven and the Suez Canal.
    It was the most glorious global news story ever. It impacted many, yet hurt no one. It had global commerce drama and slapstick comedy. It unfolded hilariously, spurred a thousand memes.
    We could all watch this re-enacted without feeling bad. It could be a drama or a comedy. It could be staged with 5 different POVs.

    Working title: “Never-given”.

    Energy subsidies that make sense right now:
    - free public transport in cities;
    - remote VAT on bikes and e-bikes;
    - buying back petrol cars if someone switches it for an EV;
    - installing EV charging points in gas stations.

    Energy subsidies that don’t make sense:
    - lowering taxes on petrol and diesel to ease the shock.

    You will learn so much about a successful woman’s personal life before you learn her name.
    As a “mom in her forties” type of woman, if I ever do something as cool as winning an Olympic medal, please share my name first.

    @Tarnport something that strikes me looking at this - the only woman present in the painting is Mary. But in post-partum, the people who usually show up to help are women, not men.
    In my post-partum period, the only man who I recall helping is my co-parent. Everyone else who showed up with gifts and help - bringing a casserole, holding the baby so I could take a shower or have a nap - were women.
    I know these nativity scenes are super male-gazy, but would love to see one painted by a woman.

    @Tarnport also - gifts of "gold, frankincense and myrrh" - tell me you've never helped a postpartum mom without telling my you've never helped a postpartum mom.
    Give this woman soup, bread, and five minutes to sit in silence, for goodness's sake!

    The US can probably attack Venezuela or Greenland or Cuba or Iran and win (if “winning” means colonize and strip the land and its people of natural resources).

    There's something remarkable about this photo illustrating the article in Le Monde about the snow fall in France:
    The roads are cleared of snow. The sidewalks and bike lanes are not.
    Yet, I count 13 pedestrians and one cyclist. The only car can barely be seen in the background.
    Anecdotes are not data. But over and over, local governments make choices about who is prioritised for access, and it does not often line up to actual numbers of users.

    Woops, this seems to have struck a chord. I’ll expand:
    In the last decades (probably the last century actually) spaces to just hang out in public have decreased, while roads have become less safe for light road users - pedestrians and cyclists, which teens overwhelmingly are.
    Additionally, online spaces have become a refuge that didn’t use to exist for teens looking for communities that are hard to find - anything from very specific nerdy hobbies to LGBTQ+ groups. 2/4

    The main reason there is a push back on teens’ social media use is the impact on bullying primarily, and the difference in what adults see as real socialising. But while this is happening (and I’m not going to pretend it’s not), banning teens from social media as a response is not just throwing the baby out with the bathwater, it’s replacing the bathwater with petrol. 3/4

    We need guardrails in social media, for everyone’s well-being:
    - stop endless scrolling
    - end advertising based on history and social media behaviour
    - support parents and teens to put freely chosen boundaries
    - GIVE TEENS A VARIETY OF OPTIONS FOR SOCIALISING
    - stop thinking we’ll end bullying by banning the medium and work on root causes
    - fund real, effective mental health support for those going down unhealthy digital roads.

    My thoughts on social media bans everywhere is that if you're taking digital connections away from teens, you better make sure they have third spaces for physical connection, and give them options for transport that is not "parents drive us around" otherwise all you're creating is isolation.
    And you may not need a social media ban if you start by preserving and creating those third spaces. #SocialMedia

    I want you all to know it’s taking all my willpower to not post photos of my child on here (or online at all) because they’re seriously the cutest little human there ever was and I wish everyone could bask in the adorableness.

    Being privacy conscious as a parent really has big downsides.
