One of the most unexpectedly difficult things about being a parent has been to not hoard every single piece of clothing The Hobbit has ever overgrown. I thought it would be easy to keep a few for memorabilia, and hand down or sell the rest. And yet, every time I pack small clothes up for my friends with children a bit younger than mine, I have to lecture myself not to hoard everything. What is it about clothes in particular makes them so hard to let go of? #parenting
Two days to go, 400,000 signatures to find. The Citizens’ Initiative to ban conversion practices now passed the threshold in 7 countries, so we need just any EU citizens at this point. https://eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/screen/home
450,000! Amazing progress on the Citizens’ Initiative to ban conversion therapy. We’re just a few hundred names away from the 6th country threshold out of 7 required. Do you know a Dutch person you could convince to sign this? Are you a Dutch person who hasn’t signed yet? Go here: https://eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/screen/home/allcountries
OK, I'm going to hammer on this one. Five days might not seem like much to get 700,000 signature, but I've seen petitions get to 1 million in a day to save baby seals, so why not banning conversion therapy. We have 4 countries above the threshold, but even if you're in those, your signature can make a different to reach the million. Aside from that, we are nearing the threshold in the following countries: Belgium Slovenia The Netherlands Denmark Germany https://eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/screen/home
BELGIUM REACHED THE THRESHOLD! We now have 5 out of 7 necessary country thresholds passed. Who will be next? Slovenia (69%), The Netherlands (68%), Sweden (44%), Germany (41%) or Denmark (40%)? National pride is probably one the least effective arguments to the target group of this initiative, but also, France is currently at 250%, and you're not going to let a bunch of baguette-eating frogs show you up, are you? Sign now to help ban conversion therapy: https://eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/screen/home #lgbtq#europe
English-language fedi, could you do French-language fedi a solid and go vote “non” in this poll? https://www.cnews.fr/questions-du-jour/etes-vous-choque-par-la-peine-dineligibilite-de-marine-le-pen French right-wing media wants to know if you find it shocking that Marine Le Pen isn’t allowed to run for election after blatantly violating laws that make democracy and elections fair, as well as stealing European taxpayer money.
@evan isn’t most of Canada’s economic activity well within 300km of the border? You can evacuate all these people without blowing up Canada’s entire economy.
The greatest tragedy of modern democracy is that the skills and knowledge needed to win an election and the skills and knowledge needed to govern are two completely different things. Sometimes diametrically opposed actually.
JD Vance dismissed France and the UK as "some random countries that haven't fought wars for 30-40 years." That will be news to the families of the 89 French soldiers and 457 British soldiers who died in Afghanistan after responding to the only time NATO Article 5 was ever invoked - by the United States.
I got a haircut today. Usually the chatter with the hairdresser is about the school or the construction work nearby etc. Today, it was about how she went through every shampoo and hairbrush and comb she buys and removed anything coming from the US. People outside Denmark often don’t realise how much the country considers itself a US ally. They are ride or die. They joined the Iraq war even though that was a dumb idea. They had an entire reality TV show about the US ambassador a few years ago.
