"One of these 10,000 users clicked a link for 50% off adult diapers" is very different from "one of these 25 users clicked a link for 50% off adult diapers".

The census hides data on a lot of small communities, because their small size makes it possible to de-anonymize from population-level totals.

@Jain I think that if you're on a small enough instance where this is a meaningful privacy risk and you don't trust your admin, you have bigger privacy concerns.

Have three options.

- You can set your referral to your instance URL,

- You can set your referral to JoinMastodon.org, or

- You can set your referral to be blank.

Is there any technical reason that these are instance-specific referral headers?

I feel like a referral that described the software or protocol being used would make more sense for Fedi.

Have it say "Mastodon" or "ActivityPub" and then there are no privacy concerns and it's more useful data.

This is interesting.

I agree that this is something that most large, corporate, or professional instances should consider doing. If it is actually privacy preserving.

I also think that this is mostly a bad thing to turn on for most small instances.

So based on some initial analysis of TBS, it looks like Mastodon.Art is the instance most likely to sign onto queerphobic/transphobic harassment campaigns.

And BlackQueer.Life is the least.

It's only possible to 100% check half the list, but... I am not surprised by those results.

Based on their Oliphant blocklist, indiepocalypse.social is almost certainly up with Mastodon.art.

If I had to irresponsibly speculate, I would assume that dair-community.social is probably not getting involved in a lot of this drama.

The difference between a limit and a suspend doesn't really matter.

Access to the users of a specific instance doesn't matter, just the TBS score.

Given that, for participation in these three harassment campaigns, we have:

It's impressive how clew.lol responded to this week's 4chan hack by starting a fedi instance two years ago and then getting themselves banned by everyone, including mastodon.social.

Just like clockwork!

On their very prominent, main account.

On their all-ages, art-focused instance.

Who is not afraid of supporting "groomer" accusations against admins of queer instances for much, much less damning stuff.
