    A long term abusive relationship.

    ‘

With every legal avenue exhausted, county officials say there’s no way to recover the outstanding money.

“[The industry] helped build Alberta as a whole to what we are today,” said Reeve Tyler Airth.

“But it’s really hard to be proud to support oil and gas when every time you turn around you feel like you're getting kicked by this very industry you fought so hard for.”

Oil market faces ‘super glut’ as supply surge hits prices

Commodities trader Trafigura says burst of new supply coming online will collide with reduced demand growth

    `

Demand from China, the world’s biggest oil importer, is expected to grow more slowly next year due to its huge fleet of electric vehicles, which have sharply reduced petrol demand. Low prices this year have prompted China to buy more crude to fill its strategic stockpile.

A tough year for the folks we got our Fall CSA basket from.

    ‘

The drought didn't help. The many days of dangerous smoke. the unbeaerable heat. Post heat wave we had a wave of sickness and mental health break requests.. it was a difficult summer for all of us.

Food security is precarious due to the enviromental unpredictability that comes with climate change (chaos) but also because of the toll it takes on the people that are working through this chaos.

      from Robin Turner
She's been a bit of a mess so.. last week, when I started this newsletter, my four year old was playing in the bath while I caught up on emails just outside the door (it was open). Suddenly he called out "mama" in a semi urgent tone. I jumped up and ran over as he held out a piece of the bathtub to me. I'm not sure how long it took me to register what happened but what seemed like a few seconds later Robin yelled up to me as I held my hand on the hole and pulled the plug.. but it was already rai

Teresa’s Story: Albertan Farmer Speaks Out About Multi-Billion Dollar Well Cleanup Crisis

Teresa lives near Vermillion, AB and has been struggling for years with unexplained health issues occurring in her children, her animals and herself. After being ignored by the company and the AER about the terrible odors from the two wells on her home quarter, experts show huge amounts of air contaminants being vented from the wells and leaking into her home.

The Hudson Medical Centre serves about 11,000 patients, mainly English speakers, according to Dr. Tara McCarty, a family doctor at the clinic and one of its co-owners.

It is the only bilingual m family doctor group in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, she says.

McCarty said Wednesday that the clinic will be forced to close April 1 after three of the seven doctors practising there decided to leave the province in response to the new legislation.

Wrote something for the local paper.

Eastern Canada, like most of the country is in a nasty drought. We are pretty obviously now in the depths of the climate crisis with obvious economic, societal and landscape consequences.

The piece points out that it is at the provincial level in Canada where the operational changes needed to rapidly decarbonize need to occur. Yet, provincial premiers are oblivious to the crisis, and though not mentioned are making things worse.

Drax power plant has continued to burn 250-year-old trees sourced from some of Canada’s oldest forests despite growing scrutiny of its sustainability claims, forestry experts say.

A new report suggests it is “highly likely” that Britain’s biggest power plant sourced some wood from ecologically valuable forests as recently as this summer.

Flash drought hits parts of the Northeast

Drought developed quite rapidly in the Northeast this summer, affecting private wells, farms and hydropower production. In Vermont, there were more than 400 wells and springs that were no longer producing enough water. Many water sources ran dry in Orange, Caledonia and Orleans counties.

Across the Connecticut River, which was low enough to walk across in places, wells in New Hampshire were running dry.

    Alberta’s ethical oil!

    ‘

The Alberta government is planning to create standards for releasing treated oilsands tailings into the environment.

Tailings are mixture of water, sand, bitumen residue and chemicals considered toxic to fish and other wildlife. As of 2023, nearly 1.4 trillion litres of the substance were stored in the province.

As disasters become more commonplace, insurers have had to pay out more than $100bn in natural catastrophe losses every year so far this decade, a number Swiss Re recently predicted could reach $300bn in a peak year.

“Insurers have no choice but to identify ways to offload increasing risk, and they’re doing it in the cat bond market,” said Richard Pennay, chief executive at Aon Securities.

With home insurance becoming unaffordable or unavailable in places that had long experience with hurricanes, tornadoes or wildfires it was a matter of time before Canadian homeowners would start to encounter difficulties finding affordable insurance coverage. With increasing flooding, hailstorms and wildfires in 🇨🇦that time appears to have arrived.

“Most states and countries are trying to project sea-level rise. Meanwhile, large waves and high tides are already beating up the shoreline,” Gary Griggs, a professor at the University of California, told me. He recently published a paper in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering pointing out that we’re not prepared for the faster catastrophes happening now. “Twenty-eight-foot waves and 7-foot tides overpower everything just like a Hurricane Sandy.”

“I remember as a young cabinet minister identifying in 2009 Sizewell as a potential new site for nuclear and I didn't expect it would be me back doing it and making it happen."

He said the project would replicate the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset.

"Sizewell will reap the benefits of replicating what happened at Hinkley. We are confident it can be built cheaper and faster."

In the past, "snowpacks" would take time to fully melt and trickle into the ground as it warmed up. This would recharge the moisture of the soil.

"What's happening the last few years is that we go from a relatively cold period of time and one or two days later it's plus 22 [C]," Laroque explained.
