As disasters become more commonplace, insurers have had to pay out more than $100bn in natural catastrophe losses every year so far this decade, a number Swiss Re recently predicted could reach $300bn in a peak year.

“Most states and countries are trying to project sea-level rise. Meanwhile, large waves and high tides are already beating up the shoreline,” Gary Griggs, a professor at the University of California, told me. He recently published a paper in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering pointing out that we’re not prepared for the faster catastrophes happening now. “Twenty-eight-foot waves and 7-foot tides overpower everything just like a Hurricane Sandy.”

A prolonged period of heavy rain brought widespread flooding to Kentucky during the weekend of February 15th and 16th 2025. Widespread rainfall totals ranging from 2 to 6+ inches occurred, with the highest amounts found from southwest to central portions of the state. The majority of this rain fell from Friday night, February 14th through Saturday, February 15th. At least a dozen river sites had preliminary crests within the top 5 of recorded crests.

Rescue efforts are ongoing for the second day Tuesday as water levels continued to rise on some waterways in Kentucky and other portions of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic flooded by a deadly coast-to-coast winter storm.
