Earlier this month, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) certified the municipality of La Pêche as a Dark Sky Preserve, making it the third in Quebec and the 23rd across all of Canada. The municipality’s night sky is now formally protected from excessive light pollution, ensuring top-tier stargazing for generations to come.

As disasters become more commonplace, insurers have had to pay out more than $100bn in natural catastrophe losses every year so far this decade, a number Swiss Re recently predicted could reach $300bn in a peak year.

“Insurers have no choice but to identify ways to offload increasing risk, and they’re doing it in the cat bond market,” said Richard Pennay, chief executive at Aon Securities.

Driving not sober eighteen year olds home from Canada Day festivities. There were a few stops involved.

They sure do slam the car door hard, obliviously.

At this rate blue-green algae in Lake Erie will be present year round.

    ‘

Researchers at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab say they have detected a harmful toxin produced by blue-green algae earlier in the year than ever before in Lake Erie.

Wrote something for the local paper.

With home insurance becoming unaffordable or unavailable in places that had long experience with hurricanes, tornadoes or wildfires it was a matter of time before Canadian homeowners would start to encounter difficulties finding affordable insurance coverage. With increasing flooding, hailstorms and wildfires in 🇨🇦that time appears to have arrived.

“Most states and countries are trying to project sea-level rise. Meanwhile, large waves and high tides are already beating up the shoreline,” Gary Griggs, a professor at the University of California, told me. He recently published a paper in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering pointing out that we’re not prepared for the faster catastrophes happening now. “Twenty-eight-foot waves and 7-foot tides overpower everything just like a Hurricane Sandy.”

“I remember as a young cabinet minister identifying in 2009 Sizewell as a potential new site for nuclear and I didn't expect it would be me back doing it and making it happen."

He said the project would replicate the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset.

"Sizewell will reap the benefits of replicating what happened at Hinkley. We are confident it can be built cheaper and faster."

In the past, "snowpacks" would take time to fully melt and trickle into the ground as it warmed up. This would recharge the moisture of the soil.

"What's happening the last few years is that we go from a relatively cold period of time and one or two days later it's plus 22 [C]," Laroque explained.

The annoying thing about the bullshit coming from Trump about South Africa, who appears to be influenced by the apartheid broligarchs, is that South Africa has done much to embrace it's diversity.

A great example is how South Africa's Springboks have won two Rugby World Cups in a row with a team that represents the diversity of the rainbow nation.

If only there was a way Americans could prevent 🇺🇸 egg producers from artificially creating an🥚egg shortage in order to reap windfall profits.

    `

Supply management is an innovative system that matches Canadian demand with made-in-🇨🇦 eggs. It means Canadians have access to a consistent supply of fresh, local and high-quality eggs, while ensuring farmers earn a fair return for their work.

A prolonged period of heavy rain brought widespread flooding to Kentucky during the weekend of February 15th and 16th 2025. Widespread rainfall totals ranging from 2 to 6+ inches occurred, with the highest amounts found from southwest to central portions of the state. The majority of this rain fell from Friday night, February 14th through Saturday, February 15th. At least a dozen river sites had preliminary crests within the top 5 of recorded crests.

Rescue efforts are ongoing for the second day Tuesday as water levels continued to rise on some waterways in Kentucky and other portions of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic flooded by a deadly coast-to-coast winter storm.

The storm killed at least 14 people – one in severe winds in Georgia, one in West Virginia and 12 in Kentucky, which took on some of the worst of the devastating flooding in the region.

Hottest January on record shocks scientists

Bill McGuire, emeritus professor of geophysical and climate hazards at UCL, said the January data was “both astonishing and, frankly terrifying”, adding: “On the basis of the Valencia floods and apocalyptic Los Angeles wildfires, I don’t think there can be any doubt that dangerous, all-pervasive, climate breakdown has arrived. Yet emissions continue to rise.”

Things I have learned from listening to @TransitionShow

The nuclear energy long con hides the underlying reason for its existence (for both fission and fusion).

    ‘

But the NIF was never “about” societal energy. Its primary purpose is nuclear weapons research. This pesky thing called the nuclear test ban treaty means we can’t just go around detonating nuclear bombs whenever we feel like it. The NIF allows study of matter at extremely high energy density.

That fellow said this today, “We don’t need [Canada's] oil and gas, we have more than anybody.”

    '

Trump’s Dream of Energy Dominance Relies on Canada

It might seem odd that the US, now a net exporter of oil, is dependent at all. But not all barrels are the same. First, the US is only a net exporter when you factor in crude oil plus refined products together. For crude oil alone, the US remains a net importer and takes in more than 6 million barrels a day.
