@clarity yeah agreed... i've been finding Bunpro better for this to pick up the grammar and sentence structure that wanikani doesn't really teach. I keep finding vocabulary that wanikani teaches that clearly have dramatically different meanings and uses, but not getting the contextual info to really understand it

every day that twitter further shits the bed I think, maybe I should use tumblr more. but the draw of twitter was always that everyone is on it... all the other options are so factionalised that there's no direct equivalent...

masto gives me part of the same experience and I like it but it's only got a portion of the people I know on twitter, linkedin gives me a tiny slice of the "using this site for jobs" but only for the most corpo stuff and not little indie things. idk where else to go ... lots of friends seem ambivalent about bluesky

katakana look so similar to each other... I'm learning them a little quicker than hiragana but stuff like シ and ツ is making me fumble

what's your favourite hiragana... I think mine is り because it looks like a bunny... ね is also good tho because it looks like a cat AND that's an appropriate way of remembering it because it's ne, for neko...

different readings of the same kanji is kicking my ass...

一, pronounced "ichi", meaning "one". cool.

一つ, meaning "one thing"... pronounced "hitotsu"... sure okay totally different. but maybe it's just numbers that are like this...

大した, adjective meaning "great" and using the same character for big, pronounced "taishita". cool, I learned tai or dai as a pronunciation for 大 already, makes perfect sense

大きい, adjective meaning "big", pronounced "ookii". as in me saying "oh okay" out loud dejectedly

learning a new language sure is a humbling experience

I'm having fun! but also i feel like I keep roadrunnering into a rock wall expecting a different pronunciation of a kanji

finally starting to learn japanese and i can feel the "i am actively learning a new thing" parts of my brain creaking and groaning back into life... maybe one of the harder languages i could've picked but if im honest its the one im most likely to use for fun

collecting my thoughts on what a morrowindlike would even mean to me... what metrics to measure by...

easy shit like rpg, stats, character/class creation..boring... the world building? other people have said enough before... we know it's good,..

stuff I like:

you can fail at things. miss attacks, whiff spells. lots of dice rolls behind the scene. combat and actions are not just "be good enough as a player to execute" but also have luck. as your character improves you can more reliably do what you want to do.

the world is full of stuff. there's stuff everywhere in morrowind, plates, mugs, books, shirts. this is the same in later elder scrolls but that stuff doesn't have VALUE; there's no point picking up plates in oblivion. but in morrowind Stuff has value, people buy it, people sell it. you have no use for a knife and fork but someone in the world does, so people trade in cutlery

you are embedded in the world. you can only fast travel by engaging with the world (boats, methods of teleporting, etc). you can fly into cities with no city wall to pass. to navigate the world you talk to people for directions, look and signs and landmarks. many (not all) parts of the world do not scale with your level. the endgame dungeon is there at level one and will kick your ass if you try.

dialogue is topic based, freeform, often not a branching tree. if you don't know what to ask you can't ask it. conversations are like wikipedia pages until someone else asks YOU a question, when it becomes branching. not everyone has something interesting to every question, but you can try anyway.

@toffy flat design sucks. graphic designers seem to jack off over how uniform they can make all the icons but theyre difficult to use and ugly imo

debating putting a footnote feature in the game i'm working on and just lore dumping via it at points where it would be awkward to explain via natural dialogue.... if it works for masamune shirow...

i stopped textually codeswitching ages ago at work so 99% of my teams messages are in full lowercase internet speak with typos, so whenever i bust out proper sentence case people know i'm really pissed off lol

maybe i'll replay bloodborne instead of going straight to ds3.... i never actually finished it just got to like 80% through and tapped out....
