@davidrevoy Oh, I hadn't heard… I.. I just don't get how Mozilla keeps making these choices that burn community goodwill.
But your comic is a fun, lighthearted way to represent it. One day that fox of fire will have a good caretaker.

@soatok With this and your blog post, that clarifies how to approach conversation - I'm not using a "Signal" alternative. I'm using a "bit more secure than Discord/etc messaging" alternative, especially with self-hosting the server too.
My priorities differ from yours,
I'm not currently in a situation where I'm comfortable depending on my phone number for account access and tying myself to a single client, but I'll see how Signal evolves. I recognize it gets very complex to solve certain problems if you're not able to have control over development of both the server and all clients.
@RedstoneLP2 Random question - do ear scritches work similarly with having four ears? Do you prefer any particular kind of petting/rubbing technique..?
Hooray! Work is underway - now coming in Mastodon v4.3 - on notifying folks when they're cut off from those they follow and are followed by when instances suspend each other:
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/27511
(Edit 2023-11-9: above link updated with early screenshots on what this might look like!)
(Edit 2024-3-20: merged!)
I feel this will be a big step forward in helping folks on the fediverse understand what happened, whether they agree or disagree with their instance moderators.
This has been merged! Future Mastodon releases will notify you when instance blocks cuts you off from your followers and follows, letting you export a list.
(Edit: To be clear, this notifies you when *your* instance blocks another instance, and not vice-versa. But having even that is a significant step forward.)
You can import that list on another server, or re-follow if the block gets undone.

Friendly heads up - Simple Mobile Tools was sold to ZipoApps¹, a company known for adding ads and privacy-invasive stuff. Their reputation is bad enough F-Droid preemptively turned off automatic updates², and the community has moved on to the Fossify organization, including Fossify Gallery³.
It's unfortunate folks didn't step up to help before the sale⁴, but ah well - progress has been made now.
