Let’s not allow the losses caused by #Alzheimers and other forms of #dementia make us forget the remaining abilities and full, enduring humanity of people living with these diseases.
As carers, it is completely normal to grieve our loved one while they are experiencing #dementia. Accepting and dealing with that #grief is essential to our own #mentalhealth and to supporting our loved one to live in their present as fully and happily as possible.
#Mindfulness can be a powerful, vital, beautiful way to survive and even thrive while caregiving. Sometimes living in the moment also requires cookies.
Kindness cannot prevent, slow or cure #Alzheimers. But the presence or absence of kindness fundamentally changes quality of life for people experiencing #dementia and those who are #caregiving.
#Alzheimers and other forms of #dementia are unaffordable financially, physically, emotionally & ethically. We need better care and support, and more research to end dementia.
In our best moments, we remember to be person-centered rather than disease-centered. That, in turn, can support our loved ones to have more of their own best moments.
For many who give care, there is no choice, no support, no respite. They survive, but cannot thrive. As a society, we owe them more than encouragement and gratitude. We owe them the resources to make practical decisions about how care is accomplished.
Self care can feel impossible. Worse, yet, it can feel like a betrayal of our commitment to give care or a betrayal of our loved one. For our own wellbeing and that of our loved one, self care is not a choice. Self care is a necessity.
#Caregiving is a master class in humility. We learn that we cannot fix every problem, can't meet every need. So much is beyond our control and more things change than remain reliable. What we can give relentlessly, deeply and tenderly is our #love.
At its core, good #caregiving is about finding a way to communicate — listening, watching and empathizing — to learn and respond to what the other person wants, needs and feels.
