New kernel update for Linux Mint means I have to once again run through the steps to get everything working on my MacBook Pro again. Another time I’m glad I documented the steps when I got this thing working a while back.
@btp I got a fantastic deal on issues 1, 7, and 8 and said to myself “Welp, might as well just try and finish the run.” Last one came in the post today.
@analogfusion Me too. When I saw the kernel update in Update Manager I went “Well, I bet that’s going to break everything” and sure enough I was right. Too bad those drivers aren’t just cooked into the kernel already.
Starting my day by updating my Linux Mint install on my MacBook Pro (there is a whole thread about setting it up a while back). I’m glad I wrote a blog post about how to fix the camera, microphone, speakers, and Bluetooth on this device because I had to run through all those steps again.
Upgrade to macOS Ventura completed. I then shrunk that partition to half the hard drive, and installed Linux Mint on the other half. Just going to fully patch that and see if everything works (no audio drivers at this point but I’ve got a lot of patches and a kernel update to install). All in all, looks like $40 for this MacBook Pro was money well spent.
Looks like this thing can go all the way to macOS Ventura, which is still supported by security updates. Creating the recovery USB now and then I’m going to upgrade and see what happens.
And we’re in! Now to update it fully and see how far it’ll go. I’ll likely end up wiping all this away for a Linux distro but I’m curious how far it’ll update.
