#1ThingaDay Recognize when you need rest. I’m terrible at this and tend to just go until I drop, but I’m trying to improve, in part because I’m recognizing that I simply don’t have the same level of energy I had in the Before Times. So tonight, I’m going to skip the thing I was planning on doing, go for a walk, do some catch up tasks and have some down time, then go to bed earlier than I have been.

Well, I was going to the caucus. But getting very little sleep and realizing that the meeting is on the other side of the ward so I’d have to drive and stay awake means that I just took a 30 minute walk to a neighbor’s and was gifted with a starter onion for my soon-to-be container garden instead. Now to see what else I can get done tonight.

On the one hand, latest Smithsonian Magazine has a good piece on Dr. Barbara Stimson, the first American woman to serve as a doctor or surgeon during WWII. On the other, the author (or the editor) is “longtime companioning” it so hard, it’s like the last few decades never happened. So she lived with another female doctor for decades, was referred to as “sir” by the men and could have starred in a prequel to “Ode to a Gym Teacher” but we’re not using the “l” word here?

It’s kind of fascinating to watch how, after spending my early years in IT as always the only out queer person and sometimes the only woman on white male majority teams, I am now still often the only out queer person but am also not infrequently the only white person and often the oldest person on much more diverse teams.
