After the book came out, I was invited to talk to schools and museums in Virginia. The funny part is that when I was researching the book, I was knocking on doors and begging people to talk to me. Now they were asking ME to talk.

Anyway, the photo I used on the front, of the students. Elderly people came to me, pointed to the cover, and said, "That was me in 1951."

Thank you. I have now learned that when books are not checked out, libraries eventually purge them. I found this heartbreaking. When I was young and naive I thought being in a library meant for the ages!!

I love when people check out my books.

I have a blog post ready. This one is about the intersection of brain chemistry and politics.

    It's here: https://terikanefield.com/your-brain-on-ideology/

When the Guardian, the Telegraph, and Communications Professor Jennifer Mercieca recommended The Ideological Brain: The Radical Science of Flexible Thinking by Leor Zmigrod, I figured I should get a copy and read it.

    So I did.

Here's my 2 picture summary of the book ⤵️

OK so, why wasn’t she given credit for her role as an early leader in the Modern Civil Rights movement and one of the first to use nonviolence as a means of achieving racial equality in the US?

👇argues that Barbara wasn’t given credit because she was a child.

I'll add that she wasn't recognized because she was a girl, poor, and black—what scholars call the “triple invisibility.”

After her strike, her life was threatened and her family home was burned down.

The NAACP took their case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Their case, called Brown v. Board of Education, was combined with cases from other states and became the landmark case that desegregated schools in the U.S.

She led her walkout more than 4 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus, and before MLK, Jr. embraced nonviolence as the way to equality.

    I just realized that it's April 23.

That means it's the anniversary of the Farmville, Virginia Motion High School student strike.

What? You don't know about that?

Well, in 1951, Barbara Johns was fed up with the deplorable conditions in her segregated school, so she organized a strike. She was inspired by labor strikes.

After she and her classmates turned the rural town of Farmville upside down, she called in the NAACP.

    Hello Mastodon peeps,

I have a new blog post ready called "Do the People Want a King?"

Usually I write a short intro but it seems to me a blog post called "Do the People Want a King" needs no further introduction.

It's part of the political philosophy series I'm working on.

Philosophical question: If I can't stop tinkering with the words in a blog post, does that mean I will never be finished?

Okay, that's it. Time to stop and publish.

I started out writing about the trial and execution of Socrates.

That brought me to the nature of subversiveness and the role of subversive elements in a democracy.

    Good morning Mastodon peeps.

I can't tell if I am finished with my latest blog post, or just ready to abandon it.

    https://terikanefield.com/democracy-oligarchy-and-tyranny/

It's called Democracy, Oligarchy , and Tyranny.

As coincidence would have it, as I was reading Book VIII of The Republic and considering a blog post about the interplay of democracy and oligarchy when Biden gave a speech warning Americans of a rising oligarchy.

Do your thing, Mastodon. (I know you'll kindly tell me if I made a mistake!)

    Hi, Mastodon peeps,

I have my next blog post ready.

In November I set out on a philosophical journey for perspective on today's politics.

When I started this series, I switched to monthly instead of weekly because these posts take so long to write.

I'm ready early, so I think my new schedule will be "whenever it's finished."

I always post here first because I can count my mastodon friends to point out my mistakes :) I don't like having mistakes in my blog posts.

    Hi, Mastodon Peeps,

I have my blog post ready.

Last month, I talked about a philosophical journey for perspective on today’s politics.

Plato is always a good place to start.
I’ll also talk about TV lawyers and the spirit of liberty because . . . it follows.

An election happened since my last blog post, so I’ll have a bit about that as well. I also included a section on what to expect moving forward.

Question: is this the reason MSNBC rankings are reportedly cratering?

I assume there is another reason because the cratering started just after the election. I figured was one reason was simply that news talk shows were painful to watch after the election. People needed to hide for a while.

So anyway, I had this idea that everyone, particularly young people, should learn what is taught in law school.

I also had the idea that the way it is taught to young people is boring.

It wasn't until law school that I realized how interesting this stuff is.

Why build an ordinary sukkah when you can build a gorgeous one?

My favorite holidays are all in the fall.

Halloween because I like the subversiveness of kids demanding candy and being whatever they wish.

Sukkot because I love the idea of a temporary shelter to remind us of life's fragility and to gather family and friends.

Day of the Dead because South Americans get it right.

I miss you all! I plan to start blogging against next month.

More greetings from southern Chile (Pucon)

To quote my brother-in-law, "We have everything here! Big earthquakes. Big fires. Big volcanoes."

Signs remind people to run if the volcano erupts. I asked if people really need to be told that. Brother in law: "Yes. Chileans will stop to take pictures."

The beach has black lava sand.

Greetings from the south part of Chile.

One reason for my social media / blogging sabbatical is a visit to Chile for a sibling reunion (husband's sibs) and the Chilean independence festivals.

I met a woman wearing traditional dress and I asked if I could get a picture with her. All of her friends wanted to jump into the picture.

I asked permission to share and they were delighted.

    More pictures coming.

    (Can you spot the gringa?)

Yes that's a volcano in the background.

The "again" in "MAGA" creates a reactionary / regressive manifesto.

"We are not going back" is the perfect counter-slogan. While Harris laid out a progressive agenda, "We're not going back" invites traditional conservatives (who are not reactionary) to feel comfortable.
