Just met my new acquaintance and we took a stroll with our dogs.

I mentioned I'm autistic. Oh, he said, I've been told I seem autistic a few times. What does it mean?

I didn't suggest that he was, but he related to some of the things I had to say about my own experience.

I asked if he wanted to try self assessment and he was curious, so I've just sent him to the embrace autism site.

Go figure 🤣

Met a very chatty and nice 55yro guy on my morning walk with my dog. Pretty sure he was adhd, if that's an ok observation to make 🤷♂️ but we had a very open conversation. No small talk 😁 He had an old stabyhound.

I think we talked for 30 or 40 minutes (well, maybe a 9:1 ratio there), and he gave me his business card when we parted ways. He told me we should lunch some day or something. Maybe I should? 🤔

@cynaq @actuallyautistic It explains a great many more autistic traits.

How it can be so hard to focus on both facial/body language and speech. Or groups with multiple dialogs!
How easy it is to miss things when in an attention tunnel, so others' needs may not be considered (seen as "lack of empathy").
Why sensory things can be so overwhelming, because all your focus goes to the thing.
Poor introception because you're always distracted.

@cynaq Yeah, I think in essence it just describes how you manage your attention. Focusing on one thing at the time with greater effort rather than multiprocessing.

I've heard a nice example I related to.

Say a polytropic person enters a room for the first time. They'll notice the ambience and the room as a whole.

A monotropic will immediately focus on each detail one at a time. They'll notice a lot about many things, but may also completely see past other things.
