@ryanc incredible isn't it. apparently JS creates 'completion records' relating to each return and picks one when the return happens, executing the code in the meantime because fuck me I guess

    I'm looking for work!

I'm a high-level infra and devops engineer and team lead.

I've previously run my own team, and previously worked at Mozilla and Facebook.

I'm looking for infra/devops lead or senior infra/devops engineer positions.

I'm not looking for pure development positions, but writing scripts, glue, and things like CI - as demanded by infra/devops - are totally fine. I just don't want to be developing the product.

The one thing I can't budge on is that I am exclusively looking for 100% remote positions, due to physical disability.

My CV is available at cv.dave.io. I am available to start immediately.

The CV is a Notion page and can be cloned directly into your workspace if you use Notion.

I'm more than happy to answer any questions, and all leads are graciously appreciated. Drop me a public or private mention, or use the other contact details listed on my CV.

That's about it. You are very welcome to boost this post, with my thanks.

As a British citizen, yes, Apple, tell our government to go fuck themselves about putting a backdoor in your cryptography. You have the support of British cypherpunks and frankly the whole British population that isn't a mouth-foaming fascist piece of shit.

      The Thing (listening device)
The Thing, also known as the Great Seal bug, was one of the first covert listening devices (or "bugs") to use passive techniques to transmit an audio signal. It was concealed inside a gift given by the Soviet Union to W. Averell Harriman, the United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union, on August 4, 1945. Because it was passive, needing electromagnetic energy from an outside source to become energized and active, it is considered a predecessor of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. The Thing consisted of a tiny capacitive membrane connected to a small quarter-wavelength antenna; it had no power supply or active electronic components. The device, a passive cavity resonator, became active only when a radio signal of the correct frequency was sent to the device from an external transmitter. This is referred to in NSA parlance as "illuminating" a passive device. Sound waves (from voices inside the ambassador's office) passed through the thin wood case, striking the membrane and causing it to vibrate. The movement of the membrane varied the capacitance "seen" by the antenna, which in turn modulated the radio waves that struck and were re-transmitted...

A reminder that I'm looking for work.

I'm a high-level devops engineer with experience of running my own team. I've previously worked at Facebook and Mozilla.

I'm based in the UK, but happy working remotely with a company based anywhere.

My CV is available at https://dave.io/go/cv if you want to check it out.

Feel free to share it with anyone who might be interested.

    Thanks!

@ryanc Yes! I should have mentioned that, it's really smart (and doesn't bloat the memory requirement).

Zstandard is pretty amazing. It's not going to win any awards for compression ratios (lzip takes that prize ime) but it's FAST.

    Really fast.

"Compressing a tar file of Web content from 5Gb to 3.6Gb in 6.9 sec" fast.

Even with a -9 parameter, it only takes 19.06 sec (and compresses to 3.5Gb).

I can't help but think that if you tried to explain IRC to Gen Z they'd probably look at you like grandad's having a senior moment again, fetch the nurse

@eevee yeah the energy argument never really landed for me, even if you focus on the thing itself the energy's burned already, whether you buy that bitstream or not doesn't change that.

of course, you should never buy a NFT, but all the reason you need is that they're fucking stupid
