If you're a #firefox user, there's built-in translation available with 128esr. It's designed for translating web pages, so it's a bit awkward to use for arbitrary text, but you still can manually enter text.
Go to any web site that has text input (eg, https://paste.debian.net/). Type in the text to translate, highlight it, right click and click "Translate selection to english". A pop-up will give you to/from language options, and then will display a translation once you select something.
@PedestrianError@ordinoides@mekkaokereke US schools (and government, and general culture) make it tough for parents, period. We ended up withdrawing both of our kids from public school and are currently suing the DOE for (2E) private school tuition.
@mekkaokereke Here's what I'd like to be true in 2025.
* Mastodon has a real ActivityPub competitor (GoToSocial paired with Phanpy?) that uses fewer resources, is easier to maintain, gets features implemented much faster, promotes safety and usability, and actually adds genuine innovations that we haven't even considered yet.
Phanpy is already there on the client side, but we need the server piece.
One of great things about bikes is how they can adjust to fit so many lifestyles and people. When my wife and I lived in a small apartment, we just had normal road bikes with racks for groceries; that was all we needed. When I injured my knee, we borrowed a tandem and she rode me around. When we had a kid, I started with a child seat over the rack, then when he outgrew that a small box bike (box in the front). 2nd kid, we got a normal-sized box bike. #BikeTooter
I'm not going to tell the mastodon devs how to do their jobs, but the amount of resources they're putting into developing clients *that aren't very good* is kind of staggering. There are plenty of Free (/open source) third-party clients that they could be recommending, but instead are letting threads and bluesky lap them in features..
1992: Clinton/Gore beats Bush/Quayle. No one* calls them Bill/Al or George/Dan 2000: Bush/Cheney (arguably) beats Gore/Lieberman. No one calls them George/Dick or Al/Joe, despite multiple Bush presidents. 2008: Obama/Biden beats McCain/Palin. No one calls them Barack/Joe or John/Sarah 2016: Trump/Pence beats Clinton/Kaine. Everyone calls her "Hillary" 2020: Biden/Harris beats Trump/Pence. Everyone calls her "Kamala"
Now's a great time to change that trend and refer to the current VP & POTUS candidate as Harris. Don't worry, everyone will know who you're talking about.
@codinghorror@jwz@bignose If nobody wanted to pay for anything, then advertisers would already be out of business. People don't mind paying for things they value. Industries continue screwing themselves over by trying to extract more and more money out of consumers while also drastically reducing value. Users are not to blame for that.
Sincerely, Someone who pays $50/mo for Propublica, as well as hard drives for pirating content because I got tired of getting ripped off/attacked by MPA/RIAA.
"Biden issues shocking statement. 'We must unite to fight against violence in politics. In light of that, I am asking everyone to please pray for Trump and also vote for him,' he said in a speech moments ago. Multiple senior Democrats lined up to endorse Trump as well, following the incident."
[Note: this is sarcasm, not something that actually happened. But c'mon, look at those headlines. Do you think the Trump campaign would stop ads if something happened to Biden?]
We should probably consider lowering the age requirement for the presidency. By the 2030s everyone over 35 is going to be completely wrecked from their 15th bout of Covid.
