@chargrille@Hey_Beth can vouch for that, I had huge issues with it too. There were people I followed I just never saw. God knows why. They were still posting and I interacted with them a good amount and then they just vanished
There are many things to like about the Fediverse but the overabundance of people who take every opportunity to assume you don't understand simple or obvious concepts so they can explain them to you like you're four - particularly when you're clearly joking about something - is not one of them
Look, there's a lot of anger and dissent in the Fediverse about the launch of Threads, but can we all at least agree that it is going to be utterly hilarious to watch Musk pretending he's not not crying as the last shreds of the platform he paid billions of dollars for go swirling down the toilet
After spending the last few years working really hard to beef up longer format histories of abandoned locations on my website I am seriously considering pulling all but, say, three paragraphs of each and putting the rest on Patreon for subs because of how disgusted I am that the work I've done will be used in Google's AI training and search results without my consent. It is a very frustrating situation to be placed in.
You can always tell when prolonged exposure to social media has critically damaged a portion of someone's soul by the fact that when they make any statement online there is also an addendum addressing what they know the inevitable misreading or crappy response to that statement will be
"I really like waffles. But if you don't that's fine! And also pancakes are good too - l, look, just JFC let me enjoy waffles, okay, what is morally wrong with that - wait, you know what, don't even tell me, I'm so sorry I asked, please forget I said anything and that I even exist. I'm so sorry. I don't even know why but I'm sorry. Fuck waffles. Or not. I don't even know any more."
- Anyone who gets a moderate amount of interaction with their posts online
There are many reasons to loathe Amazon but closing DPReview with no plan for archival is now on my top 5 list. If you're not a photographer it might sound like a big deal but that site is the most comprehensive & informative collection of camera knowledge that exists in addition to being a still-thriving community. Every time I get new gear I literally spend hours on it researching. This is such a gut punch for anyone who needs to understand their equipment. #photography https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/03/amazon-layoffs-will-shut-down-camera-review-site-dpreview-com-after-25-years/amp/
@WendyMsGator I'm aware. I'm surprised, when it took him this long, that he ever spoke out. Or said any of the things he said here. I expected him to slink off in silence and never risk ruffling the feathers of the still quite existent Trumpist wing of the government
@WendyMsGator thanks Wendy. I share your disdain for him. I hope he keeps singing this song for the rest of his life because he absolutely should. I want more Trump cronies to denounce him and their own role in his circus. But denouncing him is a really important part of that process. They should all be in a prison. Revised the original response to better reflect my feelings in light of what you just said.
Wow, I did not see Pence growing a spine as the next big plot twist*
* Yes, I know he still sucks. Thanks for telling me, person who was about to tell me. But did you honestly ever see any of this coming out of his mouth? In public? Really? You be quiet. No you didn't.
@Gargron looks like two nights in a row. I'm sorry it is happening but I'm not going anywhere. They can slow the system down but they can't win back the people they lost
1/ Here's a quick introduction: nice to meet you! I'm Matthew Christopher, creator of the Abandoned America website, book series, podcast, and ice cream flavor (sold poorly, discontinued). I photograph abandoned spaces and write about their stories - I'm interested in actual #history not ghost stories. Here are my links if you're interested in more of my work:
