hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Thursday, 07-Dec-2023 07:01:45 JST hobbsc Went to have a sip of my freshly poured #coffee and one of the #cats leapt from the fireplace mantle directly *into* my mug of which the entire contents spilled violently about my immediate area. On me, the desk, inside the laptop, inside my desktop, inside my keyboard, inside the Xbox, inside the trackball, all over my tray of random stuff, my glasses, my chair, etc, etc.
I have no idea what came over the beast. It almost felt targeted.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Friday, 01-Dec-2023 06:23:17 JST hobbsc @ironchamber i suppose you're on a mac. claws-mail and sylpheed do well in that regard. they remind me of the old pegasus mail client. there may or may not be mac builds, i dunno. i don't recall if they're qt or gtk based. if they're the former, then there has to be a mac build somewhere.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Friday, 01-Dec-2023 01:30:13 JST hobbsc @ironchamber yeah, they just took the old UI and nested it inside a padded inverted L with some redundant buttons. maybe a useful third party client will crop up one day.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Friday, 01-Dec-2023 01:26:15 JST hobbsc RIP to the js snippet I'd been using to put the "old" #slack UI back. It no longer functions. I don't understand the design need for wide swaths of wasted space.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Thursday, 30-Nov-2023 07:54:15 JST hobbsc @ironchamber yep. i need a text editor that'll let me juggle a shitload of files as opposed to a bunch of features. through the years i've gone from propeller hat over 9000 lines of dot files to just the defaults. never did like IDEs, though.
i still go back to #sublimetext occasionally but i hate that it's proprietary.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Thursday, 30-Nov-2023 07:45:22 JST hobbsc I really want to like #geany for workstuff. I use it for little hacks here and there but at work I have too many panes open and the tree browser is indispensable. the tree plugin in geany just isn't quite right and the splitting is clunky.
since abandoning #emacs, i've yet to settle on an editor. yes i know #vim exists and i used it for decades. ideally i'd like something lightweight, graphical, with sane splits, easy custom syntax highlighting, and a tree. i don't need anything else.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Tuesday, 21-Nov-2023 10:32:09 JST hobbsc @ironchamber out of touch people produce requirements for software and processes they don't have to endure themselves. they hire managers who either don't speak up or are ignored. devs follow the managers in the same pattern. it's perpetuated because it produces profit from people buying the software to inflict upon their subordinates while also not having to endure it. this is all bolstered by various bits of regulation and fearmongering. lowest common denominator + shit runs downhill.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Tuesday, 21-Nov-2023 08:34:38 JST hobbsc @ironchamber yeah i get that but also just having a timer blocking you from taking the quiz is hot garbage and does nothing but waste people's time.
if i didn't have sloppy mouse focus, i'd have been stuck there for a while. that or i'd have to use another computer to do things while i waited for no good reason.
i suppose it's a mechanic to keep people from speeding through the course but it seems to me that the quizzes should resolve that issue.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Tuesday, 21-Nov-2023 08:30:23 JST hobbsc oh and if i navigate away from the timer on the quiz screen, perhaps opening a different browser tab, the timer pauses. great UI.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Tuesday, 21-Nov-2023 08:30:23 JST hobbsc Our current HR training barrage is better than it was last year in terms of UI (it's not flash anymore!) but it sure is a pain in the ass to navigate.
They try to be cute and relatable but it just makes it hard to find the info they want you to regurgitate. Plus there's no speed on the videos and if you go through the training faster than they want you to, you have to wait and stare at a countdown timer until you can take the quiz.

I just run it in #podman on my desktop. You can't post from it I don't think. I don't have a reddit account, though, so that doesn't matter much to me.

hobbsc (hobbsc@social.sdf.org)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 05:51:35 JST hobbsc @ironchamber apt description. i have a low tolerance for it. same with reddit, though libreddit makes the former a little more palatable.
