Awesome catch this morning. A grey heron made a dive into the reeds, and came out with two frogs!
Catching two frogs was one thing.

Today’s waddle was in nature reserve ‘Lusthof de Haeck’ near the Nieuwkoopse Plassen.

It was wonderful to hear and see the mixed-species foraging flocks in bushes and trees.

And I was delighted to see the winterguest Fieldfare in large flocks again. Sat down for a while to observe flocks coming and going. And a sparrowhawk startling a flock while trying to catch a Fieldfare.

In a more open area I saw a fight between common kestrels and carrion crows. Will post a video in a reply.

Among others I saw a beautiful stork and cranes (probably escaped) in the fields.

Found my goal species of the day: Eurasian wryneck. Second time I saw this bird. Still from some distance, but it landed right in front of me.

Today is Keti Koti (chains broken), annual celebration on 1. July of the abolition of slavery. Of Surinam origin but also celebrated in the Netherlands.

Officially slavery ended in 1863, but people were forced to keep working the next 10 years on ‘contract’. So often you see 1873 instead of 1863.

This weeks checkup and current blood glucose values keep me struggling and dead tired. Both physically and mentally.

Goal bird today was a Merlin (Smelleken in Dutch). Every winter it stays around the airport. Previous winter I was not able to find it. Today trip looked to end the same way. But on my way home I saw a dot in the field. Parked the car and took some shots from the distance before it took off. Talked to another birder, confirming it was the Merlin. A lifer!

Spent 45 minutes in the morning on birding. I was surprised by the many house sparrows. Nice to see many hooded crows (not often in the Netherlands) and a couple of mergansers.
