Hey pals: Someone I like made a tool that extracts still images from youtube tutorials so we can follow them step by step with screenshots as God intended instead of having to constantly be pausing and seeking back and forth. I have LOST this precious resource.

Was it you? Will you give me the link? I will bookmark it this time.

UPDATE: FOUND. It is https://github.com/obra/Youtube2Webpage by @jesse and it deserves a genius grant if we're honest

@cstross using his actual name helps people filter and manage their feed because nicknames evade mute lists, so actual name should be preferred

That said, the "president Elon" thing is already getting under Trump's skin. It's absurd that schoolyard taunts can impact federal policy but here we are.

I just found my favorite new Chromium feature: go to settings/content/sound and you can set "don't allow sites to play sound."

This will mute ALL sites until you manually allow them (which you can do via site settings in the URL bar).

If you, like me, hate basically all noise, please enjoy this bounty.

@polotek this is exactly what I miss about them on here. Quotes are a way to say "yes, and..." and jump off one thing to start another conversation without derailing, interrupting, or clogging up the OP's mentions with tangential replies.

I've been the subject of quote-pile-ons before, so I get the concern. But in my experience, people who want to be weird jerks will use whatever tool is handy.

Hello. I have ~10 years experience as a developer and today I spent fifteen minutes of my wild and precious life debugging why an if check was returning true on a boolean variable when it was set to false only to eventually discover it was actually set to the string "false".

So if you're ever feeling like you're not smart enough to be a programmer, just remember: none of us are smart enough for dynamically typed languages.

Hey folks. Everyone--EVERYONE--can get got by a scammer at some point.

When we blame folks who get socially engineered for their carelessness or lack of vigilance, we're making it less likely that people will self-report when they got got, and perpetuating the myth that all we need is vigilance to avoid scams.

The narrative that only fools get scammed helps scammers. Don't fall for it.

I've been thinking lately about how we teach folks about digital security and safety and how we don't really have a way to retire old advice

I know folks who heard they should never connect to a public or unfamiliar Wi-Fi network, never scan a QR code, never charge their phone at a public outlet - and they never got the stand down memo that those threats have been largely mitigated and as long as they're keeping their phones and browsers up to date, it's usually fine to do those things.

And to some extent it's easier to say "just don't" than it is to teach nuanced risk analysis, because sure, connecting to other computers is never 100% safe no matter what.

But I worry that when reasonable precautions calcify into superstitions, we're contributing to the narrative that computers are inherently unknowable and dangerous, which leads to people giving up on even trying.

Read an article today about why Americans think alcohol has health benefits and it's apparently another "well the French are healthy and they do X so it's healthy to do X."

So here's your periodic reminder that France (and Italy, and Sweden, and Japan, and basically every country you've seen in a "this country is so healthy, what's their secret?" headline) has universal health care.

The secret is access to health care. It's always access to health care.

#USPol The moral of the fascist discord leaker is that fascism, racism, antisemitism, and misogyny are security risks. People who are dedicated to those things will harm your organization in pursuit of their fucked-up ideology, and you should not wait for them to do so before you show them the door.

Seeking advice on how to get a scrivener > Android workflow going, from folks who successfully edit docs on Android and get them to sync to scrivener (if you have not personally done this, referring me to folks who have is helpful but no advice please).

    What I want:
    1. Work on a project in scrivener on my Mac
    2. [Non-onerous steps]
    3. Open and edit files within that project on my Android phone
    4. Save file on Android
    5. File saves in such a way that Scrivener can see and import the changes.

The worsted wool I picked up from B&T for my riding jacket is lovely, but the color clashes with my skin tone. Time to do some math and science.

These four pieces were in the dye bath for 10, 20, 30, and 40 minutes each. Can you spot the difference?

Me either. This dye struck FAST.

I could tell at 10 that the dye was exhausted - that's why I pulled the first at 10 instead of 20. But I wanted to see if the longer times would shrink or felt the wool. But the wool came through just fine — so @maco and I moved on to the big pot for the full yardage.

I left the pot to cool on the stove - wool is fussy and prefers to change temperature slowly or it'll shock and felt.

But then I had to get the still - hot wool out of the very large and very full pot, which is itself a four - hand lift onto the stove before it even had the wool in it.

Spent some time considering syphons before going with a simpler method. Here's how we solve strength tests with int:

Well, the dye came out super streaky - maddeningly, all on one side along the entire length, so there's no consistent yardage I can use for the skirt.

@maco suggested I cut out pattern pieces with room for shrinkage so there'd be more room in the dye bath, but I am still resizing the pattern and didn't want to waste the day so I forged ahead.

And this is what happens when we rush things in sewing.

Advice welcome IF you have personally tub-dyed wool with acid dyes before and know how to fix a streaky dye job.

I know googling the problem and suggesting links comes from a good place, but I too can use a search engine.

I've dyed silk plenty of times and even tricky colors always come out great. Wool is the worst.

My plan right now is to wait until I can cut the pieces, then re-dye try to fully saturate the color. It will be darker than I wanted, but it might work.
