I am honored to be leading a virtual conversation at the NY #Alzheimer's Association about #grief, guilt, memory and love. It will take place this Tuesday, August 20 from 1 to 2 pm ET. Please register if you or someone you love has #dementia. I look forward to sharing my story and hearing yours.
"[Harris has] borrowed heavily and brilliantly from the 20th century’s most effective politician, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who repeatedly pointed out that people aren’t free if they’re hungry, homeless, or unemployed. #Harris is adding the freedom of women’s bodily autonomy, freedom to read what you want, and freedom from sickness to the pitch, pointing out that Democrats are promoting freedom while Republicans are trying to take it away." -- Thom Hartmann
"The [#NYT] article cast #Trump’s racist and misogynistic response to being challenged by a woman of color as inevitable and unpreventable – something like the weather or a natural disaster — rather than as a deliberate choice on his part."
One example of what Christo-#Fascism looks like: "In addition to calling for the passage of the Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act, which would allow adoption and foster care agencies to make placement decisions based on their “religious beliefs or moral convictions”, it also calls on #Congress to ensure “religious employers” are exempt from nondiscrimination laws and free to make business decisions based on their religious beliefs."
"The entire GOP has leaned hard into toxic masculinity and often overt misogyny. The Republican National Convention was a grotesque display of both. The convention stage was a traffic jam of men who had been violent towards women or made excuses for violence starting with the nominee himself. . . With her background, she may be in a better position to push this issue than any other potential Democratic nominee could have been."
"If Democrats do pull off a victory in November, it will be in large part because of her [Pelosi's] unsparing refusal to give into what felt like inevitable defeat."
"In one nanosecond on a sleepy Sunday afternoon, the most important presidential election in American history has been stood on its head. Suddenly, it is the 78-year-old, often incoherently rambling Trump who is the oldest person ever to win his party’s nomination . . . Suddenly, a presidential candidate who is a convicted felon is slated in early September to debate California’s former top prosecutor, who rose to national prominence by grilling Supreme Court nominees."
The #memoir I wrote w/#neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller is about my father's early-onset #Alzheimer's & the devastating grief that accompanies that death by #dementia. Bruce explains how a #brain works & doesn't. Images of #PET scans & #MRI's, & a glossary w/definitions of medical terms -- aphasia & anosognosia -- are included. If you want to learn about the brain circuitry involved in word finding, spatial orientation, behavior, et al. please consider reading it.
"Of his own mental health, he says he tried counseling once but 'it was just too weird.' . . . . One of the most sadly ironic aspects of Vance’s book, and by default Howard’s film, is the link between the mental health crises that impact his family and the eugenics movement that Vance hints at favoring."
#ThomHartmann: I’ve had 2 articles this year, 1 on the fossil fuel industry & the 2nd this week’s piece on “yellow journalism,” openly censored by a social media site for “violating community standards.” People who tried to repost them were threatened w/their accounts being shut down.
This #ThomHartmann column is important for many reasons, including its acknowledgment of the #media being a target of violence (and now there is a list).
#TimothySnyder talks about why the #media must confront this fact. #Fascism is aided and abetted by media silence. Submitting ahead of time makes the very thing the media is afraid of much more likely to happen.
"State officials told publishers to remove some references to climate change from textbooks used in Florida's public schools."
"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped." (#Orwell, #1984)
I canceled my #NYT and #WaPo subscriptions a while back, which was at once an easy and hard decision. Bothsidesing issues in the news sections and journalistic malfeasance in the opinion sections made it easy; hard were the handful of informative, investigative stories to which I now only have access if gifted articles. Anyway, I don't know what their front pages look like today, but if #Project2025 is not a front page article, perhaps it's time to cancel yours?
