I'm not convinced this is sound advice. ChatGPT and similar tools are here to stay. There's no putting the genie back in the bottle. Moreover, AI can be used ethically and responsibly in many ways to facilitate writing and research.

My duty as a mentor is to help students navigate this shifting landscape. Advising them to stay on the paths we walked when the ground under them is rapidly falling away seems irresponsible.

I agree wholeheartedly that we're in very murky territory. It will likely be years before the scholarly community reaches consensus on the use of AI.

I think a start in that direction, though, is to acknowledge that these questions didn't have sharply defined answers even before AI entered the fray, or at least not as sharply defined as we like to pretend. We should also check our instincts with history. New technologies have always met with fierce resistance.
