It's beyond English journalists to think of England as an individual entity because to them it's the same as the UK. The other three component parts are simply irrelevant.
"In a televised address on Sunday, Starmer pulled himself away from his holidays, and flanked by a pair of the same flags being brandished by the rioters, announced: "I won’t shy away from calling it what it is, far right thuggery," as he shied away from calling it what it is. English nationalist racist Islamophobia."
"There’s a striking feature of the media’s coverage of the outbreak of far right violence which has overtaken much of England in recent days. For the most part it is being presented as a British issue when it is in fact an English one. The Sunday Times has the headline “Riots engulf Britain” while The Mail on Sunday has the front page banner “Tinderbox Britain”. Both the BBC and Sky News seem to have a similar difficulty using the word England."
"Dozens of arrests were made following scenes of disorder in England and Northern Ireland on Saturday, with police warning that further violence is likely in the coming days."
"The [UK] Labour Government could defend a controversial anti-protest law brought in by former Conservative Home Secretary Suella Braverman in court next week."
"A decision has not been made yet, but short of a last minute u-turn, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is set to face off against human rights group Liberty in the Court of Appeal on Tuesday and Wednesday."
"Westminster isn't working for Scotland, even the Labour party is having to admit that essential truth.
"What the Labour party still won't admit is that a centre-right Westminster government headed by Keir Starmer – a government committed to Conservative spending limits and refusing to raise taxes on the wealthy – won't work for Scotland either."
"An extremism expert has warned there is a danger that campaigning for – or even debating – #ScottishIndependence could come under UK counter-extremism legislation in the future.
"Professor Chris Allen – who leads the extremism hub at Leicester University’s Centre for Hate Studies – told @TheNational that Yessers could potentially even be referred to the [UK] Home Office’s 'Prevent' counter-extremism programme."
"#Scotland wasn’t mentioned once in [UK] Labour’s big pre-election pitch today [16/5/24].
"[Neither in] Starmer’s 2,631 word speech. Nor the hefty 5,724-word press release which included comments from the likes of Ed Milliband and Yvette Cooper.
"... neither Wales nor Northern Ireland were mentioned either."
