“HTML is the most significant computing language ever developed. Underestimate it at your peril.”
I’ve been saying this for 10+ years and being endlessly mansplained by mediocre developers who will be receiving this pure gold article by @tim from now on.
how do I even begin to explain that over a decade of devaluating design and frontend as disciplines coupled with the JavaScript frameworks pure disregard for the web platform resulted in absolute dogshit interfaces being the norm
“We could be choosing to create software that is local-first, more private, and more thoughtful. Still, we're choosing to build for the machine—not for each other.”
This analysis of current state of the design industry is spot on.
This damning analysis of AI and it’s supposed potential of simplifying work/generating money for investors is so worth your time.
„All of this excitement, every second of breathless hype has been built on this idea that the artificial intelligence industry – led by generative AI – will somehow revolutionize everything from robotics to the supply chain, despite the fact that generative AI is not actually going to solve these problems because it isn't built to do so.”
„If nothing else, this illustrates the disconnect between those building AI systems, and how much (or, rather, how little) they understand the jobs they wish to eliminate. A little humility goes a long way.”
„The freelancers having their livelihoods replaced by bosses using generative AI aren't being "replaced" so much as they're being shown how little respect many bosses have for their craft, or for the customer it allegedly serves.”
2000s: can’t believe i have no space left on my hard drive to store my things 2010s: can’t believe i don’t need hard drive space because all my things are in the cloud 2020s: can’t believe all my things are used to train an ai without my consent, better store it on my hard drive
one of the many things that insatiable vc appetite for growth has done by funnelling absurd amounts of money into companies with no plan for sustainability is forced smaller businesses into defending decisions to not go freemium or offer endless discounts.
it constructed a reality in which free is normal, therefore lack of it is suspect and needs defending.
i’ve been writing front-end for the last 17+ years, and man, it’s so under-appreciated, under-resourced and plain disrespected it makes my web soul hurt.
systems aren’t maintainable, semantic, accessible or performant and it’s a direct result of javascriptification of FE and pure disregard for it as a discipline.
