A massive grift got interrupted while all the pieces were moving into place.
The crypto/NFT guys all seem to be the same people hyping AI.
They had set up a way to pay for things digitally, a way to con people into paying for digital art, and were in the midst of rolling out a way to generate digital art in limitless quantities.
It was a 3-piece chess move to blast them into limitless wealth, but the crypto and NFT market collapsed just before checkmate.
Trying to wedge your 7,000-employee layoff into the narrative around A.I. fear so you can hire folks back in 6 months at a reduced salary they'll accept because they think they're competing with a robot is some lame shit. Just admit nobody knows what IBM does in this space anymore and you're downsizing as a result.
The notion that the company that built Deep Blue in 1997 and Watson in 2011 is only now going to pivot to AI in 2023 at the cost of 7k jobs is laughable.
"ActivityPub is just like e-mail" well guess what, gmail silently dropping e-mails sent from another e-mail server because the admins disagree is the worst thing about it.
The notion of even trying to deal with it as a user is utterly absurd. I'm supposed to find an instance that DOESN'T defederate? That's posted on a server-by-server basis, there's no tool that's like "here's everyone I follow, find me an instance where I can continue following them all"
The constant-threats-to-defederate thing is going to kill this place, seriously.
Defederating an instance is an extreme measure and it should only be taken in extreme circumstances.
Finding out I might stop getting posts from people I explicitly follow because they happen to be on an instance being defederated by mine all because a bunch of admins I don't know got in a spat over a user I don't follow is just about the most annoying value proposition imaginable.
LOL apparently Elon and some Goons were just on a Spaces talking about how they're going to remove the author_is_republican and author_is_democrat stuff from the code.
Except, as I've tried to point out, it was specifically added FOR the release of the code, they're brand new.
So they added it JUST so they could publicly announce they were removing it.
Today I posted about "Twitter's collapse" in the future tense and got a bunch of replies misinterpreting it as present tense, saying Twitter hasn't collapsed and I was wrong.
So I edited it to make it clear I was talking about the future and immediately got a bunch of replies saying Twitter has already collapsed and I was wrong.
I keep thinking there's nothing else #Elon can do or say that would surprise me but yesterday the CEO of Twitter publicly stated, in a Tweet, that #Twitter is a poor tool for communicating.
I keep thinking about how when I was at Twitter all the rage was trying to get people to "hire Twitter" for different jobs and the actual CEO is here admitting that Twitter sucks for talking to people compared to videoconferencing, a service Twitter doesn't offer.
Hard to think of a movie that aged more poorly than "Bowling for Columbine"
Once you know that the reason Klebold and Harris shot up their school was that they were neo-nazis targeting minorities and girls, the whole movie and Michael Moore's sympathy for them play out very differently.
Of particular note is the scene where serial sexual abuser Marilyn Manson highroads the audience and Moore talking about how he'd have prevented Columbine by sitting down with those kids and listening to them.
