There are lots of underlying assumptions, too, like "everyone's using it," "it's inevitable," "it's necessary," "we'll be left behind if we don't adopt early" et al. If you accept them, then many things become excusable.

I'm surprised how quick people are to turn to AI & automated solutions in general, rather than their own brains & abilities. But that's a different topic.

@chrysomeles And so last night I kept thinking about #MarkLenard's #Romulan Commander in #BalanceOfTerror, a decent, reasonable individual concerned about the welfare of his ship & crew but pressured into a confrontation by an ambitious subordinate with powerful friends. Back inna day this demonstrated the evil of the bad guys. #StarTrek

Also TIL that Lawrence Montaigne, who played Decius, the ambitious Romulan, also played Stonn in "Amok Time."

@chrysomeles Nice article. But the first thing that popped into my head when I started reading was the #Jedi order and the #GalacticRepublic of #StarWars. While the writing there tends to be shallower & decline/corruption of the Republic & the Order is a major plot point in the prequel era, I think you see some similar increase in moral ambiguity in contemporary Star Wars releases like #TheAcolyte, #Ahsoka & #Andor. #StarTrek
