@ryanhoulihan Seems a bit like asking “but where are you *really* from” when someone who’s not white says they’re from America. Like, your identity doesn’t satisfy me, please say something else.
@ryanhoulihan My sister is a linguist and she has worked on documenting dying languages with fewer than ten native speakers. She says you’re not there to prescribe how the language should work, but to describe how people use it and what it means to them. We should have the same mindset with English. Sure there’s an element of right and wrong when you’re writing a legal document or a paper for school. But what goes into the dictionary is a description of what we mean and we get to influence that.
@ryanhoulihan When I feel like I’m getting old, I like to think about how long I’ve been an independent adult living life on my own terms, away from parents and out of school.
Dyoure 34 but depending on when you moved out and whether you went to college, your adult life began only 10-15 years ago. Hopefully you live at least into your 80s.
In reality you’re only 20%-ish through your adult life. Most of it lies ahead of you and there’s plenty of time to guide it in whatever direction you want.
@aral Silly question time, what would be the expected behavior of other instances you federate with when the post is pushed out to them? Ignore the post entirely? Strip off the media? Accept the file anyway regardless of their own limits? Don’t mean this question in a snarky way, but it seems like adjustable size restrictions would get sticky on anything that federates.
