Even so, it's still hard to avoid ending up with legacy systems.

And as business models evolve and the technology landscape shifts, dedicated modernization efforts are still likely to be needed (although less often and smaller in scope).

In an ideal world yes it should.

Mature engineering organizations balance the need to add new features with simplifying and improving their architecture.

It would be great if every company invested in continuous architecture improvement.

But most don't for a variety of reasons: ...

Building and operating a developer platform effectively requires high levels of discipline.

Otherwise the platform can become a dumping ground for things no other team wants to own or can result in high cognitive load for engineers who have to maintain so many one-off solutions.

There are no real silver bullets or magic frameworks to help. I think a lot comes down to being disciplined and principled knowing how to say "no" the right way.

Sometimes I get annoyed by companies selling people's data. But then I see "You'll get more relevant ads" and that makes me totally cool with it.

A wooden table is made from wood.

A glass table is made from glass.

Why is a coffee table not made from coffee?

This is actually relevant to domain modelling: sometimes we name things after their properties and sometimes their purpose.

And sometimes we're talking about the same physical thing from the perspective of a different subdomain where it has a different name.

These factors also play a role in determining how we decide to shape boundaries.
