@tk @skye When the conversation has a reasonable round trip time, you could ask questions to gauge the familiarity of your interlocutor, too, isn't it?

She was a PhD drop-out, with her research topic being pretty heavy theoretical stuff involving complexity class. She was the kind of theory person who had little exposure to practical stuff, so she didn't know git at that time.
Guess what, because she didn't know git, her male colleagues assumed that she needed an explanation of P and NP. (Which she probably knew better than them 🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦).
Beware of your assumptions!
