The Indigenous Shasta Nation of California just won 2800 acres of their land back after 100 yrs, the largest in California #history! And, California is paying for it!
It's part of the Klamath River dam removal project, an ecological project which revives a 300 mile salmon habitat! Shasta land was stolen in the 1848 Gold Rush & 1911 by imminent domain for the Copco No 1 Dam. Shasta chairman Janice Crowe said “Today is a turning point in the history of the Shasta people”

Juneteenth has #Indigenous history. When Black people who escaped slavery in Florida joined the Seminole Tribe, they became Black Seminoles. They're also called Mascogos b/c they migrated to Mexico, where slavery was already abolished. The Mascogos built the town El Nacimiento in 1852, but still interacted with Seminoles in Texas who brought them Juneteenth in the 1870s. Black Seminoles in Mexico had to survive slavery, the Trail of Tears, & the US-Mexico Border to celebrate #juneteenth #history

We should all know the Indigenous general Rumi Maqui (Stone Hand). He was Peruvian veteran of the War of the Pacific (1879-83), Chile's settler colonial war on Peru and Bolivia. Afterwards, Rumi Maqui re-indigenized & defended Native rights to their stolen land. Then in 1915, he led the Rumi Maqui rebellion in Puno, Peru, to retake the Indigenous land from the settler landowners.

Let's talk about Natives on this Trans Day of Visibility, like Kauxuma Nupika (c.1780-1837), an Indigenous AFAB Kutenai who divorced his Canadian husband and then declared himself male. As a trans Native, Nupika became both a warrior and prophet, predicting the arrivals of Europeans to Kutenai lands amnd trying to forge peace between nations like the Salish and the Blackfeet

One of the earliest recorded Indigenous philosophers and scientists is Juan Yunpa.

Born c.1520, Yunpa witnessed the Spanish conquest of the Incan Empire. Mentioned by Guamán Poma, Yunpa was a philosopher and astronomer who studied the sun, truth, & read the lost Incan writing system of Khipu. He lived nearly 150 years.

Gahela Cari is a trans Afro-Andean woman from #quechua parents. She's the most visisble trans leader in #peru, appearing prominently against Manuel Merino’s failed legislative takeover in 2020. She’s also a leader of the party Nuevo Peru and attempted a campaign as the 1st #Native trans woman for congress. Her proposals were to expand trans & cis women’s rights and local agriculture. And, she continues her work today
