I don't usually recommend c-dramas or k-dramas to people unless I know they like to watch them but I'm making an exception here for The Untamed. It's not new - it came out in 2019, but I only recently watched it myself. I think everyone should watch The Untamed, twice, if you can put in the time (it is 50 episodes long).
The Untamed is a fantasy c-drama with a low budget so some scenes might be off-putting, particularly if you don't usually watch c-dramas but that's not where the magic of The Untamed lies. The magic is in the acting, in the storytelling.
The Untamed weaves an intricate story about human nature, how complicated emotions and morality are (definitely not just black or white); about love and family.
All good stories allow the reader to take their own meaning from the story. They allow for different interpretations. This is what I got from The Untamed:
It's a story about brotherhood. About being there for each other and having each other's back, even when they make you mad.
It's a story about love and connection. How people show that love and connection through everyday actions.
It's a story about loss and how grief changes people, drives them to do things they wouldn't otherwise do.
Whether anyone involved intended this or not, as a neurodivergent I strongly felt Wei Wuxian (the main character) was neurodivergent coded. I very much related to him.
As an ace, I can't tell you how happy it made me to watch a love story based purely on love and connection. I am very aware that most fans wanted that relationship to go physical but for me this was perfect. This was the dream.
Life is messy. Love is messy. Communication helps but communication is hard. This story illustrates these so brilliantly.
Everyone should watch The Untamed.
