No I will not tell you that you absolutely have to or whatever like that, it's not the "mastodon.social sucks and you absolutely should not use it" post
But you might like: - Actually usable local feed of smaller, topic-specific/themed instance - Smoother experience and better federation (mastodon.social seems to be notoriously bad at caching content before you follow someone, even if the other instance is already federated) - Supporting decentralized & diverse nature of Fedi which guarantees its long-term survival - Having your mod team being some friendly silly goobers that you can easily contact, talk to, and thank for their thankless job (on smaller instances it usually also means much faster mod team's response to reports)
@kaia that's going to be the best fedihire story ever that we won't learn happened for decades to come until you publish some diaries as an elderly person
A few weeks ago I had a chance to temporarily become a guide for a #blind person and I must admit, it makes one see the surrounding infrastructure in a completely new light, because normally we don't think about it at all.
It also really shows off how badly designed #accessibility of public spaces can be.
Every time I interact with public transportation I'm annoyed there are no or insufficient audible clues for vision impaired people, or visual information for deaf people. It somehow is always only either one or another. Or even none at all.
And it's just a tip of the iceberg of accessibility problems, there are huge numbers of other issues that I'm not even aware of.
I love alt texts on fedi because they aren't just a necessary accessibility feature for vision impaired friends
They also provide context that can be often useful even if you have healthy eyes
Not to mention I think experiencing fedi made me write better alt texts than any web accessibility course I've ever seen, probably because it's one of the very few places on the internet that take alts seriously and not like an optional nice to have :/
I may or may not be talking about Discord, which not only doesn't support IPv6 but also passes hard-coded IPv4 addresses as a part of their WebRTC config, meaning Discord voice chats are broken on networks that rely on NAT64+DNS64 :)
