The Dutch #government just collapsed... again.

They were already a caretaker cabinet, waiting for elections to happen.

But a debate about imposing sanctions on Israel resulted this evening in the minister of Foreign Affairs' resignation, after which his colleagues from the same party resigned as well.

I've never seen government in The Netherlands so unstable.

And yet, still no #sanctions on #Israel forthcoming.

Doordat het PVV-amendement werd aangenomen, werd de hele asielwet voor CDA onacceptabel.

Daardoor is er nu een kans dat de asielwet sneuvelt in de Eerste Kamer. (Ook omdat de Raad van State waarschijnlijk zeer negatief gaat zijn over het wetsvoorstel.)

Als het PVV-amendement niet was aangenomen, had CDA dan voor de wet gestemd en was die er dus doorgekomen? Ik denk dat die kans groot was.

Was die 'amateuristische fout' van PvdA/PvdD bij de stemming misschien meer strategisch dan het leek? 🤔

Domain Catching is a nasty sort of #fraud. Ever heard of it?

Here's what happens:

Fraudster manages to register an expired domain, then creates a simulation of the previous website (using an archive version)

Next, they add (spam) content to this website

This way, they exploit the online identity of the previous domain owner

The damage done can be serious, and a personal violation

Ik heb trouwens de grote sprong gemaakt en ben van MacOS overgestapt naar Linux (Ubuntu).

Waarom? Een reden is dat ik aanvoel dat MacOS-gebruikers binnenkort verregaande integratie van 'kunstmatige intelligentie' door hun slokdarm geduwd krijgen. Dat betekent voor mij: weg privacy. (Voor u zou dat het ook betekenen, trouwens.)

Ik had al verschillende Linux computertjes staan, dus het is niet nieuw. Maar om nu mijn 'echte' computer zo te draaien voelt als een omwenteling. En een verademing.

A Dutch appeals court has ruled that The Netherlands must stop supplying #F35 parts to Israel within 7 days.

The court judges that there is a real and obvious risk Israel uses the F35 jet fighters to commit war crimes in #Gaza.

Bound by international treaties, The Netherlands is required to suspend all trade when there's an obvious risk traded weapons are used in war crimes.

This is a victory for those who are on the right side of history. End complicity to #genocide now!

It's clear that #diaries from the 1930s and 1940s are valuable. They are personal and mundane traces of a history we now know to be tremendously significant.

The unfolding breakdown of international order and morality in the 2020s will be seen as similarly momentous by future generations. They will ask the same question we ask of the people living through the 1930s:

"How could they have let it happen?"

Keep a #diary. It will help future generations answer that question.

Link rot is so very, very real.

I just visited a site that 'archives' articles from 2015. The majority of links no longer works.

What to do? You could archive pages, and link to the archived pages (I've seen many people do this). But how durable is that? Will those archival sites exist still in 10 years time?

I'm used to consult books that are centuries old. That we're unable now to archive digital stuff for longer than a couple of years is terrifying. #archives #digitalhumanities

And, just to be clear, this was the same protest during which queer people ended up being ordered to put away their rainbow flags (during a Pride event!) and where later people were attacked by police for rolling out an anti-capitalist banner. These things are all connected, and that’s why we need to unite and stand together.

Yesterday at a protest, Dutch #police ordered everyone to remove their face mask.

It was a large gathering, and several of us were wearing #masks to protect against #covid19. It's a bloody pandemic, after all!

I did not comply, but felt very uncomfortable after the order. As if a target had been painted on my forehead.

It doesn't help that anti-mask attitudes are the new norm, and that those trying to avoid covid are abandoned from all sides. And yes, lefties, this includes many of you.

I'm posting this graph by Eliot Jacobson here because I think it's truly remarkable how strong this outlier is growing to be.

It means that #sea temperatures are extremely unusually higher than normal, and the departure from the historical record is almost off the charts. #climatechange #heat

The effects? I couldn't tell you, but I do get the idea that it won't be very pleasant
