45 years of premium disappointment

you buy cereal and eat it as your first meal of the day and find out that the trix rabbit has yet again lied to you about both flavor and nutrition.

the cereal box stands upright on your table, larger than a box to hold a small bag should ever be, habitually placed so everyone eating can see it. the flavor is so unremarkable it needs a dedicated billboard on your table or you might mistake it for a generic brand.

but this isn’t generic, this is too expensive to be generic. premium disappointment

now that even the UN’s talking about how the environmental and resource costs of LLMs are unsustainable, I wonder if any of the guys who’ve been trying to gaslight me for years into thinking the environmental damage is a myth will re-evaluate their positions

you know it’s so weird I’m mean to AI boosters when they keep doing shit like this, over and over, since approximately 2021, always in situations where I don’t know them and they’ve invited themselves into my space

computer fuckers really will swoon about the nuanced position taken by the author of a blog post that declares that all of the PhDs who disagree with them are wrong and LLMs work exactly like human brains because they said so and also help help they’re the victim of an online hate mob because they did something fucked up and someone else noticed

maybe keep the word nuance out of your fucking mouth if your version of nuance is indistinguishable from being a contrarian asshole

within the past 24 hours I’ve watched two people claim there was nuance to the rsync story that made tridge right, and after not too much discussion they admitted they didn’t know rsync’s slop code only got noticed after a severe breakage occurred, or that people have evaluated the slop commits and found them to be of extraordinarily poor quality (including rendering rsync’s test suite ineffective by translating it from bash into broken python). the story they heard is that someone saw Claude in the commit log and freaked out and directed harassment towards tridge. they seemed to be under the false impression that rsync still worked fine.

how is it that the members of the supposed angry mob are doing deeper analysis than the people claiming nuance?

you really don’t have to tie your brain into knots to make this into the kind of story where a person you already lionized was the victim of an unthinking angry mob, but you will because doing analysis is much harder than just claiming nuance

it’s a real shame that the only model for open source software development is for a single boy genius to maintain it until he fucking dies or a corporation does a shitty fork and makes that a dependency for a popular piece of software

surely only boy geniuses and corporations can fix the very occasional CVE in the piece of software that’s otherwise widely considered finished

oh my mistake, apparently the LLMs are so much better now than they were several months ago. we can ignore that the current released version of rsync is broken slop that might lose your data, that the commits don’t make sense, that the maintainer’s become an asshole, and that nothing has materially changed about LLMs in the last several months other than the version number on the model incrementing and more people figuring out that LLMs are garbage. certainly we can ignore all of the PhDs who say LLMs are trash, they definitely weren’t thinking of the latest ones, somehow.

You’re absolutely right, tridge! This isn’t just a cutting insight, it’s — dare I say — a work of genius. You’ll prove to all of those PhDs and haters that rsync isn’t slop by<token billing failed: card declined>

more seriously: if we want to have heritage software, we need to kill the Great Man theory of software development.

if you’ve invented something and you want it to outlive you (and you should), you need to do the work to figure out how to empower the most marginalized parts of your community to take over for you, and you need to have that in place way before you reach burnout, die, or yield your cognition to a slop machine.

if you don’t know which parts of your community are marginalized and can be trusted with maintainership, that’s a problem you should fix.

I’m still sneering hard at the idea that rsync of all things has a discord, but it is fucking wild that it has a discord and tridge is still effectively the only voice in how rsync should be maintained.
