I don't know what it takes to get an article retracted for egregious factual misrepresentation, but I've reached out to Breitbart News about John Binder's recent article that egregiously misrepresents our recent research. Let's hope they do the right thing and issue a retraction. More information below.
Evan Prodromou, who helped inspire & create the #ActivityPub protocol that makes @Mastodon run, called this recent #Twittermigration a โtipping pointโ.
โI have not been this excited about federated social networks since we published ActivityPub. The shift has started. โฆ Weโre doing this. Donโt be on the wrong side of history.โ @evan
Musk claiming that a lot more people are engaging on Twitter is like me claiming that a lot more people are stopping by to look at my new house after I set it on fire. Itโs in our nature to stare at something while it burns.
I remain genuinely and pleasantly shocked that in the course of 10 days or so, we all just went, โno way, eff this, weโre going to @Mastodonโ, and now weโre just here and people are so nice and writing alt-text in their images and sharing great stuff and using content warnings and everything. Obviously none of this would have been possible without years of work by #Fediverse / #ActivityHub devs that came before. Even so, this is really something, no? ?
@Gargron Congratulations! Thatโs a ton of people. Iโm curious, Eugen, about your teams capacity and the hardware capacity. Any issues when it comes to scaling right now or any foreseeable issues? And any way we can help? Iโm donating through Patreon and encourage everyone else to, too, but curious if there are other things to look out for.
I donโt know if Twitter will ultimately implode. I donโt know if Mastodon represents the future of social media. All I know is, I have personally seen a tremendous outpouring of positive energy on @Mastodon this week and that gives me hope. Thank you.
Mastodon will update to 4.0 soon! Here are the most exciting new features (in addition to fixes & changes):
- ability to follow hashtags - ability to filter by language - ability to translate posts - ability to post HEIC files (i.e. your iPhoneโs native photo format) - define user roles (big deal for admins) - define sign-up process on your Instance (admins again)
I decided to support @Mastodon on Patreon at $10/mo because I believe in open source development and keeping the Internet free and open to the public, not controlled by a for-profit company. People who canโt pay, should not have to. Those that can, please consider doing so and letโs build a better platform together. There are other places and ways to donate and support, this is just one. โฉ@Gargon @Mastodon@mstdn.social @feditips #SupportMastodon#TwitterMigration#Patreon
@Gargron For those of us that used Twitter primarily for news, I wrote a post about how to keep up with news (specifically immigration news, policy, and research) without Twitter here. Might be useful for some people.
